Hey this is totally random,

so i'm flying to miami this weekend to help my sister pack and move her stuff into her car and driving it to Michigan. i'm only bring my backpack with a change of clothes. I have 2 ratchets (no not the Transformer action figure) and with ropes that I would like to bring onto the plane in my backpack.
Would TSA allow me bring bring them onto the plane without checking them in?

thanks for any feedback

Airport security doesn't even know what 'rope' is; they are all bomb fuses.

I'd be inclinded to either buy them at the destination or possibly mail them rather than subject myself to unnecessary hassle (if understandably opposed to waiting to retrieve checked-in luggage). The chances of being questioned at the least seem high. Feeling lucky, punk?

I take my climbing ropes on aircraft all the time, for safety reasons. I haven't heard a peep about it yet. You should be fine.

Edit: Noticed the metal attachments. Depends. I've gone through security with a rack as well, but it's hit and miss. Sometimes they take a look at all that metal and tell you to check it, no questions. Sometimes they ask what it is and what it's for. Sometimes they just wave you on.

Could go either way. The safe bet is to fedex it or buy it there.

Edit 2: and those are webbing straps, not ropes

Are you concerned that you will suddenly need to climb out of the plane?

Sporting goods are okay? Great, then here's what you do:

Attach the rope to the front wall/cabin of the plane.
Put on skates.
Set up a treadmill and get on it while holding the other end of the rope.
Turn on the treadmill.
Pull yourself forward while on the moving teadmill and yell "See people! This plane would take off!"

Why are you coming to Michigan?!

BTW, take care. We are supposed to get freezing rain on Monday.

What if they turned into snakes?
It would still take off. Then Samuel Jackson will say a few profanities, a stupid movie ensues, and I die a little inside.
(That movie was just painful to watch.)

No, I'm concerned that because climbing ropes are composed of Nylon 6, which is very vulnerable to chemical damage, and god knows what your luggage encounters on its way in and out of the plane to the baggage claim, that if I let those misfit airlines handle my expensive life-critical safety equipment, it might get damaged in some way.

Chemical damage on climbing rope can be completely impossible to detect without lab tests - no smell, no sight, no feel, no nothing, until the rope snaps at the point of exposure. If your ass happens to be 700 feet off the deck in the middle of a climb when this happens, there's not a happy ending.

And god dammit, don't go smarting off to me again before I punch you in your jacked up face, leaving nothing behind.

fuck the tsa. its the most retarded and useless waste of my money. No country besides US and UK has these stupid laws of not bringing water and what not.

Its kind of sad how many people are just getting used to it saying "oh, this is the way it is, so it must be right". Yea yeah... security, my ass. It should not take 2 hours to get through the check in process for me at the chicago airport.

</rant>

You should take the rope with you. Wtf can you even do with it, strangle somebody? Maybe if you do, they are gonna start putting handcuffs on passengers as they travel.

Just hide them in an MRE.

"Yes, mr TSA, it's just a family turkey dinner with all the fixings in this giant MRE"

wow i was gone for a weekend and missed all the good stuff....
to report what happened: i flew out of Flint and before checking in my bags, i asked the TSA people if it's ok to bring the contraptions on the plane....which they allowed...

as i go through security checks, all these TSA folks stared at the xray monitor as my bag is going through. it's like they never seen such a thing in their lives...to make the story short, they spent 30 mins wiping the rachet and webbings to "detect any explosive material." i thought i'd be late but of course my flight was delayed for 3 hours....

just got back from driving 22 hours straight from miami to saginaw, i listened to the gps and drove through west virginia at 2am in the morning. scariest moment of my life as i was the only idiot on the road at that time. i thought my life would end just like the movie Wrong Turn.

anyhoo, i made it back safely and importantly the rachet and webbings stayed in the bag the whole time during the flight!
