I feel the opposite is true. I felt McCain pandering to what became the Tea Party by choosing Palin as a running mate is what cost him the election. I felt the 47% sound byte of Romney pandering to rich donors is what cost him the election.I appreciate your optimism, but don't share it. After McCain lost the election because he refused to call a black Christian man a Muslim terrorist just because he was black, and a real conservative lost just because he was Mormon, the Republicans learned that pandering to racists and bigots was the only way to win elections.

Trump is not a conservative. Trump is a populist opportunist who energized the fringe just enough to pull off a win. The losses the GOP will suffer for embracing him will force a correction and realignment.
