Does anybody have experience w\ Rosetta stone and more importantly w\ installing it on a network?

I was handed a Rosetta Stone : Personal Edition box ($550+) and was told to make it work! They want it installed on a single computer and want people to be able to use remote desktop into that computer. The problem is that I have no idea how to get the microphone to be recognized over an RDP session and don't even know if that's possible anyhow.

Anyhow... the Rosetta Stone website doesn't help very much and is very cryptic... no products section, but rather "Solutions... etc"

I wouldn't expect the Rosetta Stone site to be especially helpful about getting multiple users working for their Personal edition.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

5 minutes after they gave me the rosetta stone I was like.... " Wow... wish you would have talked to me before buying a $550 software package that doesn't work how you want it to work."

So you're unhappy that people on multiple computers can't use the personal version of Rosetta stone?

He's unhappy his company bought the software without consulting him first it appears.... as it obviously isn't going to do what he needs.

The best thing you can do is to set it up on a work station that is available to all in the company. Use can be scheduled. Forget network access. IOW, create a language lab work station.

I still think the personal edition is limited to 5 users on a single computer.

OP: You want to get the Network version. Once you get the server piece up and running, you can install the client on any machine you want. Then you are only limited by how many licenses you buy. For example, you buy 5 licenses for Spanish level 1, you can have 5 users connected at the same time for Spanish level 1. You can have as many users as you want in the system. I'd call Rosetta Stone, I've always had good support and service when I call in.

Agree provided we stipulate a fact not in evidence - i.e., that individuals are required to log on to the workstation. All of my systems and software are set up for anyone who uses the computer, period. The machine can be on and open, and it has no way of knowing whether the actual user is you, me, or the lady in the next cubicle. And, if individuals are required to logon, maybe 5 will suffice.

It would be nice to see if the personal package could be traded in on a network package - but that was not the assignment given to OP. I did not suggeest installing it on a network. That's a no-no. But it can be installed on one computer.

I think what he means is Rosetta stone is very much progress based. You can have 5 "learners" saved on it. Since each learner in theory would spend months with the program it would be counter productive to delete users. The program also ignores the Windows users. Even installed as "all users" the learners carry over from login to login.

OK - that makes sense to me. So, restrict it to 5 students. That might satisfy the requirement.

If you really want to get sneaky here is an idea:
I have the RS software package installed and wanted to use it on multiple computers. So I found the user database/progress file and wrote a custom launch script which would copy the DB from a specified mapped location (users' z drive) to the RS data folder. When the RS window is closed the script would copy that same file (now updated) back to the users folder (overwriting)
So if the versions we are talking about are the same then theoretically you could have an unlimited number of users since each person would technically be providing their own user db/progress file.
If you follow what I mentioned and are interested let me know and I'll try and dig the script up.

Your first post is an offer to provide a script that violates a commercial software license? Way to go...

well let's see... the original poster wants to use a personal software setup on a network with multiple users. That doesn't exactly sound like playing by RS's rules but since the question was asked of how to do it answers are free game.
The script I wrote doesn't violate any rules or license agreements. It simply makes the program db file portable in a way. I used it on multiple machines at home and at work, just for me though.
Now IF someone wanted to use that script to have 500 people use the software then that is up to them.

Actually answers on how to commit software piracy are against the forum rules, they are not "free game".

Reported.
