I've been tempted to grab a mechanical keyboard... Are they really worth the money?
That depends entirely on you. If you type a lot and you catch yourself not being really in tune with the typical cheapo membrane keyboard, it's probably worth it.

I buy my own keyboard for work, I buy good keyboards for home, and I won't have it any other way. I type 10+ hours a day, there is no reason not to get the best of the best when you're talking $100-$150 for a tool that lasts 5-10 years, being used 10+ hours every day.

If you're not 100% sure, the $99 is a really good price for entry just be sure you want this type of switch. Red Cherry = no tactile feedback, it just goes straight to bottoming out, which in particular a good number of gamers seem to enjoy. I personally am a Brown switch guy, some tactile feedback with little noise (compared to the Blue clicky switches.)

If you don't like it, this keyboard would resell at a small loss very easily.

OP: Great deal. All I've read about the Rosewills is very positive at this price point. The red backing plate is sexy. $20 rebate card is sexy.

It looks exactly like my two-year old Filco (rebadge?) with brown switches, which I paid $130 for. If I needed a new keyboard, I'd be all over this deal. If you've never tried a mechanical keyboard, you should... you'll have to beat the ladies off it with a stick.

Agreed. For those that care about full N-key rollover, make sure your motherboard has a PS/2 port. USB only gives you 6-key (which should be enough for MOST games, but definitely not all).

The problem with buying these mechanical keyboards is that it seems like it's almost impossible to try out the different types of switches. Is there a store where you can find display models featuring the five different types?

i've been wanting a mechanical keyboard but i can't fit a full size one on my desk. in fact, i can't even fit the filco tenkeyless.

the only ones i can find are the deck mini, (linear keyswitch only) and noppoo choc mini (direct from china!...literally 0.o)

think i might get the noppoo choc. unless there's any other mini mechanical keyboards i haven't heard of yet.

It's generally agreed that the Rosewill mechanical keyboards are a rebadge of the filco majestouch which is $150 keyboard. Not a bad deal for basically $80.

Tempting.

I had an abs M1 which I think I got on clearance for $20. I used it until last week, when the D key stopped working. In trying to take it apart, I broke it even worse.

Though, my wife and everyone in Teamspeak have stopped complaining about hearing my keyboard.

does any company make something similar to this but without the number pad? i mean specifically, something with standard key layout (not cramped) and with standard sized keys?

i had one of those ABS M1 keyboards... but went back to my cheapy membrane keyboard because i seemed to have problems with letters not appearing in the right order.

tempted to jump on this. although i think i'll probably wait for something more... clicky.

I recommend these:
http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=special&filter=spacesaver

They have brown, blue, black, clear and red switches, pretty much all there is from Cherry. The keyboards are of very good quality. Detachable and routable (underneath keyboard so it sticks out left, right or center) cable, decent key quality. Very reputable vendor.

Rosewill has different models for all the types of switches, but the reds are the only one offering the $20 gift card.

I picked up the Corsair K90 for $99 at Fry's and it is 100 times better than that cheap Roseswill crap! Mechanical are better IMO. Corsair is quality whereas Razer are overpriced. Try the K90 if you don't believe me! I dare you...

Just want to put in my 2 cents for the folks asking if mechanical is worth having. Though I am not sure this deal is the best deal around.

If you want a inexpensive Mechanical Keyboard the M10 isn't horrible (50-60 dollars). Not particularly well made compared to some other Mechanical keyboard but if you don't want to spend 100 dollars not a bad board.

The best place to read about mechanical keyboards is this thread:
http://www.overclock.net/t/491752/mechanical-keyboard-guide

I personally won't ever use a non-mechanical keyboard if I have a choice. I have had ALPS Black (ABS M1) and Cherry MX Brown and Blue keyboards,ThinkPad laptops, Dell laptops and regular membrane keyboards.

The ABS M1 is a horrible keyboard I feel because it was loud and ringy and required way way too much force to use. At least mine.

I have Noppoo Choc Mini 84 MX Blue and and iOne MX Blue M10 and Ducky MX Blue.

I had an MX Brown which is tactile but not clicky. For me it is mostly about the click. The auditory feedback helps with touch typing. So does the tactile feedback. I only type about 80-90 WPM but I still think it is one of those things if once you use one you like it you won't go back.

The general rule of thumb is Brown or Black for games and Blue if you just want to type. I just want to mostly type...

The rosewill is made by the same manufacturer as the filco majestouch. Your K90 doesn't even have 100% mechanical keys.

You have never used the Rosewill keyboard so keep your opinions to yourself.

I thought that people preferred Black or red for gaming because the tactile feedback of browns and blues can interfere with quick taps of keys.

browns (and clears, which are a stiffer and more pronounced brown) are ok because its just a tactile bump, although that could technically slow you down

blues can be bad because of the extra mechanism built in to provide the extra auditory click upon actuation, and thus the switch as a whole has an actuation reset point above the key actuation point which can lead to hysteresis

but ultimately it really just comes down to preference

personally I much prefer reds first and blacks second for gaming, but my gaming is mostly comprised of FPS and action oriented games that can benefit from a more analog and free-form input that simply doesn't need to be so exactingly precise as you dance around a map trying to avoid gun fire, etc.

my experience with blues and browns were pleasant and certainly function for RTS/RPG type games where the bump (and in the case of blues the extra click) were welcomed to help provide feedback to know that I definitely hit the key I was looking for

I prefer brown switches, and I wanted something backlit and with built-in audio & usb, so I went with the xArmor U9BL-S. It's been fantastic since I bought it in April. Literally no complaints whatsoever. Except that I can't seem to find it anywhere to buy another one. XArmor or iOne or whoever they are seems to have switched its focus to the Scorpius line of peripherals. If you can find one, and you like brown switches, I highly recommend it.

When my dad brought home our first IBM PC/AT (1983 or '84) its keyboard had that "now you are depressing a key" feel to it, very nice. Now they are quite soft or spongy, I can understand why somebody would want one of those.

I like this keyboard (it was in the similar item area) just because of the lightly illuminated keys, and they are blue to boot. It would be very nice at night when I'm on the computer and don't have a lot of lights on. The problem is, I'm soooo used to my natural keyboard I just can't go back to a regular one. I hate trying to type on my laptop, ugh.

Nicely illuminated keys, subtle color.

I get the oppurtunity to try out the reds with this keyboard because I got one for my mother who types for a living. If I don't like it I know to try a different style of mx switch.

I get the $20 gift card also.
