ROTFLMAO... all 12,000 people at my school responding to one another...

There was a (pretty legit looking) virus email sent to our school's official student email list. Apparently for some reason this list does not prevent the recipients from replying all.

So one guy innocuously emails with "don't open that attachment, it's a virus."

Then another guy responds with "I have a Mac, I dont have to worry. Macs rule."

Then another guy responds with "Macs suck."

Then a guy responds with "Beta rules."

Then a guy emails trying to get people to go to the nightclub downtown this weekend because his club is sponsoring a party there.

Then there's the "take me off this list" which occurs about thirty times.

Then there's the "Stop emailing! You cant be taken off this list." which occurs about a dozen times.

Then there are people plugging their coin collections, their uncles, their aunts, and the horses they sleep with.

It was soooooooooooo funny. I've been holed up in the library for the last three hours and was shocked to see 100 emails in my inbox but i read through them sequentially and was laughing so hard I had to cover my mouth with my windbreaker...

ahhh, good times.

not sure if this works...but i hope someone out there's got some idea how to
block sht.
i'm gonna try it, you should too: go to TOOLS (like ari friedman), then
MESSAGE RULES, then BLOCK SENDERS LIST. go to MAIL RULES, click NEW, click
WHERE THE TO LINE CONTAINS PEOPLE, click below where it says DELETE, then go
below, click on the highlighted blue text that says PEOPLE, then type in
COLLEGE-FYI-OUT.
make sure you do the same thing for CC MESSAGES.

so far it's worked for me.
if this is in fact an official listserv sent out by penn, FsCK EM. let them make
sure this crap doesnt happen again and make them fix it. though i do feel bad
cause we dont give them any money.

Guys... no one is getting removed from anything. You are not e-mailing
a list-serve that will "remove you." Every time you send a message to
college-fyi-out@sas it is sending mail to everyone. If you don't want
to receive any more of this junk e-mail, then stop sending e-mail to
this address or to anyone else. And on a final note, no one needs to
send any additional e-mails out to second my opinion. I don't need nor
want reassurance, and this flood of e-mails with everyone confirming
that the attachment is a virus or that they want to be removed is
simply obnoxious.

ok. so this is a university SAS listserve. Nobody can take anyone off. SO if everyone would PLEASE stop emailing (including me), this wont be a problem anymore. ok?

Did the guy just paste the whole student body's e-mail addresses into the To: field, or is it a special address they have set up to e-mail the whole student body? If it's the second case, they ought to limit access to it to people who need access. If it's the first case - that happened at my school too, about once or twice a year. Really pissed off the IT guys, and understandably - each message was 400k-3MB because of the huge list of e-mail addresses. Multiply that by 2000 copies of it being stored on the mail server, and you have 800 MB to 6 GB per message. Everyone who sent the e-mails got a talkin' to the next day.

Edit: Yeah, whoever set up your listserv sucks.

So today I woke up around noon. I had an acting class at 1:30. so I
decided to stroll down and check out what bui was up to. Once I arrived,
i ordered a customary ham egg cheese salt pepper ketchup. After that I
went to class. Unfortunately I had another right after, so I proceeded
there around 3. we had a dandy little discussion on Aristotle and plato
before abruptly adjourning around 10 to 4. After that class I was so
hungry I could hardly contain myself, so I stopped by the greek lady on
the way home and grabbed a gyro. My roommate pronounces it like the
greeks do. that really bothers me. Sometimes he says it and I don't even
know what he's talking about, so I have to sit there and think for a
second and mentally translate it. Anyway, that did the trick and I had a
few hours off before a night class I added last week because I needed a
fifth class. I was a little unsure about it at first, but after a few
lectures, I've decided I'll stay in it. It's a little different, but
afterall that's what I'm paying 40 grand a year for. some diversity. I
was really tired after that (despite spending about half the lecture
catching up on some sleep), so I headed back to 39th and chestnut -
keeping an eye out for potential muggers - and decided to take a nap.
Here I am. its 3 am - and I'm wondering why people keep yelling at
eachother on this list serve. This is such a wonderful opportunity for
us to get to know eachother, and I encourage you all to take full
advantage.
