As Acetate said, they foul up the grounding, unless they're made of twisted pairs (TP). TP is so much better that it should be reliable even out to 3 feet (I've tried my homemade 5' flat TP cable to ATA100).

Also avoid rounded cables that have metal braid on them because they too can worsen the signals, and most don't even have the braid grounded.

Most rounded cables that are bought seem crappy too me. My friend got some nice vantec cables off of ubid fairly cheap lately...they looked much better than the ones I owned before.

I recently purchased some Gladiator cables form IOSS. AT 30 bux a pop, they are not cheap...but look cool and seem to do well. They have an actual ground cable for the ground pins also, hard plastic ends, copper foil over the end connectors, and ferrite cores. On my current raid setup, ABIT KR7A-RAID i can pull a 95Mb under sisoft (i know, not the best benchmark). Not attributing this to the cables or anything, but they sure do look trick!!!

Never had a problem and I have 2 for each of my raid channels, i think they're 20 or 24" cables, picked up from Newegg, not bad but i've seen better. If you want a real easy rounded cable, buy some teflon coated ide cables (tough as hell, you can't break them) and just zip tie it, sure it doesn't look as good but it works the same and cause the teflon is so tough you can fold the ide cables really small....

I like single device cables. But with several IDE components, that's out.

My round cable setup...
* Single IDE cables to each RAID drive
* Double cable to Burner (master) & 3.2GB (slave "Windows ghost" drive)
* Double cable to 16x DVD (master) & 40x CD-ROM (slave)
* Single cable to my floppy drive
Works for me

<< << what is the specification for IDE cables? >>

part of the spec says the length shouldn't be more than 18in(45 cm) though longer cables have been used without problems!
>>

I only use 18in cables for my HDD's, but will use up to 24in for optical drives. I think the data corruption problem with longer cables would be more of a problem with HDD's than optical drives.

Looking for more experiences w/ rounded and/or long cables. Any more comments on expensive QVS or Gladiator rounded cables and if they eliminated all possibilities of problems that *could* happen w/ standard round cables. Or comments on extra long cables (QVS 35")?

Just buy some round IDE cables.. forget about brand or anything, they all work fine... I have 4 rounded IDE's in my PC at home, and I've never had a problem, they look nice, and improve airflow.. they make the perfect upgrade for a LAN gamers box.

I have rounded cables in my box.

I dont care much about looks, heck it's a computer, not a chick, but they sure make it easier to mess around in there, and they improve the airflow, so to me, the choice is obvious.

I built a full tower case in November and used flat ATA100 cables. I changed mine to round cables from coolcases.com in January, and have had no problems. I haven't run benchmarks. FWIW

I have the rounded cables in my case, one of them just went bad last week.
I was getting all kinds of errors, replaced it with a standard cable and everything is fine.
