Hello All;

I recently installed a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Router to my main computer which has a DSL modem for internet connectivity. My system has a core dual processor with 2GB of ram 1TB of disk space, DVD writer etc.

My operating system is Windows XP running SP3, prior to installing the router on my system I have found that my normal boot time was in order of one minute.

Now after having the router set up my boot time has increased to over three minutes.

I have timed the boot process and the results are as follows:From cold start to the point of Windows providing its boot sound is in the order of 46 seconds.From the cold start to the point at which Windows first shows the Windows XP icons is two minutes and fifteen seconds.From cold boot to a point that Windows is now usable is approximately three minutes and ten seconds.

My question is simple how do I improve the boot time for this workstation?Is this normal or do I have some form of conflict that is causing the delay?

Sounds like you've got a DHCP/DNS problem. I've witnessed Win XP machines having a very slow boot if those weren't setup right. Usually because it times out waiting for a DHCP reply.

1. make sure that your Modem is actually a Modem Router and by adding the Linksys you created double NAT.

2. If the modem is a modem only and the computer uses software to activated the PPPOE logon, disable the software and enter the DSL logon Id and Password to the WAN side of the Linksys.

First off thank you for the replies.
Regarding the use of DHCP it is not enabled and I manually set up each of the IP address for the Modem, router, work station and HTPC.
Regarding having a modem/router this is not the case is is just a plain modem
for Internet access.
Please keep the suggestions coming.

I agree that It has to be some sort of network issue. To test this, plug another computer into the router and see if it too acquires extra boot time. if it doesn't, maybe try switching ports on the router or even swap out the network cable. If that makes no difference, try uninstalling your nic drivers and reinstalling them. You didn't join the pcto a domain at the same time did you?

Most Modems do not have an IP address if they are just a Modem.

May be you want to post the Modem Model and list of the IP that you used.

The out put of a Modem only device is Not a private LAN address, it is an Internet external IP.

I am sorry but I do not have another PC to try and see if it gets the same results.

Regarding assigned IP's here is my list:

Fixed IP addresses:
192.168.1.1 TP-Link Modem (Default Gateway)
192.168.1.2 Router Port Forwarding
192.168.1.3 TP-Link USB Connection (Hidden Service)
192.168.1.4 Main Work Station
192.168.1.5 Home Theater PC
192.168.1.6
192.168.1.7
192.168.1.8
192.168.1.9
192.168.1.10
192.168.1.21 Linksys Router

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
DNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

If you look at the IP address 192.168.1.3 TP-Link USB Connection (Hidden Service); it was found to have been assigned when I tried to use this address for my workstation and was advised by windows that the IP address was used by another service but was not currently in service. Was advised that a conflict would occur if the address became active.
The model for the modem is a TD Link (2+2) Model #TD-8817.
I hope this helps, one thing when windows comes up I end up with two networking icons on my task bar one is for the Internet the other for the LAN connection.

Hello;
You where right the TD-8817 ADSL modem turns out to be a router/modem, here is the information on it!

What This Product Does

ADSL2+ Ethernet Modem Router TD-8817 is a high performance modem router that provides a full rate of ADSL2+ standard with the superb reliability and a cost-effective solution for home and small business. It is a 2-in-1 device that combines the function of a high-speed DSL modem and a one-Port 10/100Mbps NAT router. Using the TD-8817, you can easily create a secure and high-speed wired network to share files, music, photos, and printers with multiple computers.2-in-1 Solution

As a 2-in-1 device, TD-8817 combines the functions of a high speed DSL modem, and a one-Port 10/100Mbps NAT router. No need to buy a separate router, the TD-8817 is designed to give you a perfect solution to acquiring and sharing high speed Internet access. Then you could save the cost of procurement and the cost of device running.Access High-Speed Internet

Unlike a dial-up Internet service, a DSL Internet connection is always on so that you do not have to wait to access the web. Supporting the latest ADSL standard, the TD-8817 provides higher performance (up to 24Mbps downstream) and longer reach from the central office of your ISP(Internet Service Provider).Advanced Network Security

Support NAT firewall, TD-8817 could prevent potential attacks from across the Internet. For added convenience, it supports access control based on MAC address, IP address, domain name or application so parents and network administrators can establish restricted access policies for children or staff.Quality of Service

Built-in QoS engine provides various QoS policies that help prioritize Internet traffic to enable smooth IPTV streaming and lag-free online gaming. Thus users could experience the benefit of smooth network connection without concern of traffic congestion.Easy to Use

The device comes with a CD with an Easy Setup Assistant that helps you step by step to complete your Internet connection and security configurations. This feature allows even novice users to setup the router products without sacrificing any key features, just play the AUTO-RUN CD bundled to have your network set up quickly & hassle-free.

I sure was not expecting this to be the case as it has one USB port and one network port (RG62) only. Now where do I go and what do I do? I purchased the Linksys router but does that mean I do not need it? As mentioned I at present want only two computers wired together one my workstation the other a Home Theater PC?

I found a USB connection still in the registry and have removed that along with a bunch of other stuff which I have removed. Still slow boot up but will keep trying.
I have some Internet communications to the HTPC but some applications time out and in addition I have not been able to get a LAN connection established. The HTPC system is running "XBMC OpenElec" software. Which means it is a Linus system using Samba.

Hello JackMDS;

I have followed your link to ( http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html)!

Fairly easy instructions but am a bit confused as what to do, If I use the USB port my connection is only 10MB/second versus the 100MB/second that I get using a NIC port on my motherboard. Probably not an issue as I only get 7MB max from my ISP.

Does that mean I should remove the Linksys router and connect the HTPC eithernet cable into the modem/router? As mentioned I do not need wireless at this time but thought that if I needed to buy a router it would be best to get a router that supports both wired and wireless communications.
This has been a long process for me with little to show for the time invested, if you could help me to conclusion I would be in your debt.
Best Regards

Al
