IS there any function that you can't do with a server with ICS function ( or winrouter..... etc for sharing internet software) compare to a hardware router??

All these terms of DMZ ( what is DMZ ) are giveing me a headache since i still haven't manage to find a site which explain all these to me. And all i have heard from tech site in my country is that some router will give some problems and there are even ISP which disallow some brand of routers.

After reading all that i have decided to research on relying on a server with software and Dual Lan card to share internet. However, is there limitation to these? ( All though i don't believe there is any since a router is only a small computer with limited function )

And one last question. Does online games only allow one IP per login? I mean if i am playing "X" ( takes it as counter strike, EQ, or else ) on my computer in my network, could another computer on my network ( like my brother 's computer ) also play on "X" with me as well??

There shouldn't really be much of a difference for most uses... Biggest disadvantage, can't turn the computer off...

DMZ or DeMilitarized Zone allows one computer to have full access to the internet, like it was the only computer connected to the modem... This is useful for some games and for running servers... with ICS the server has this full access...

And all i have heard from tech site in my country is that some router will give some problems and there are even ISP which disallow some brand of routers.
I have had ISPs say the same thing here in the states... IMO they are lazy and don't want to provide tech support for them... If one of the major brands works, they all pretty much should because they are doing the same thing and in a very very similar fashion...

There are some limitations but not a whole lot. sometimes sending specific ports to certain computers is a bit harder and stuff like that but for most users it isn't a big deal. The biggest drawback that i already stated was the fact that you can't restart or shutdown the server...

And one last question. Does online games only allow one IP per login? I mean if i am playing "X" ( takes it as counter strike, EQ, or else ) on my computer in my network, could another computer on my network ( like my brother 's computer ) also play on "X" with me as well??
It depends on the game you are playing, to be honest i don't do that much gaming, and i don't play those games, so i do not know how they react to only having one IP for several boxes... I know at one time most games wouldn't work with two PC and one IP but i do not know if that has changed...

Final Remarks:
If you can handle the extra cash for the router it is worth it... IMO it is just a little less of a hassle than dual lan cards... At least in the states you can get one for relatively cheap.. $30 or so, and even cheaper if you know someone upgrading to a WiFi one...

I agree with you that getting a router will be easier and cheaper as well. But as far as i have read there is no perfect router! Some have problem with certain ISP, some don't support certain function, and some even thought support most function and most ISP, have problem with certain features....

You mention most users, well i will be using one computer, and one for my brother and one laptop and one server. The server will act as a FTP, WinMX client, file/MP3 server. Which makes me natually thinks that DMZ is needed...........

And could any body answer the questions about games?? Whether one IP is enough? ( For playing the SAME game )

This is not the "real" definition or use for a TRUE DMZ, only the ones the marketing people in the SOHO router business came up with.

A True DMZ will have a different subnet then the LAN and WAN in most cases. It sits between the 2, leaving the DMZ'd server to be not only accessible from the 'net, but to also make it MUCH more difficult (if configured properly of course) for a compromised DMZ server to be used to infiltrate the LAN.

In a SOHO router, a DMZ'd computer just has all ports forwarded to it, but is on the same subnet as the rest of the LAN pc's.

I've done networking for LAN Parties, as far as I know. Everquest, Quake 3, Half-life (Counter-strike), Unreal Tournament, Diablo 2, and Starcraft all are fine with multiple connections from a single ip. Only thing I can think of that doesn't like it when you use the same ip is IRC... some ops don't like clones. But IRC isn't a game
