Router/Power Off Question

Comrades,

I have a three machine LAN in place here connected via a Linksys 4 port router/switch. The principal computer on this network has three hard drives, the first of which multi-boots three Microsoft OSs and the second and third hold SuSE and Red Hat Linux respectively. When I shut down this machine from any of the Microsoft OSs, the machine turns off but the LEDS on the router corresponding this computer remain on. If I shut down the computer from either of the Linux distros, the machine turns off and so do the LEDS on the router. What might account for this difference?

Fuzznuts,

Thanks for the prompt reply. The ethernet card is a 3COM 3C905C-TX and, yes, it has Wake On LAN. I note that my BIOS has this feature disabled, it states "Stay-Off" in the appropriate category. Would the ethernet card be able to stay on even though the BIOS has Wake On LAN disabled? Why the different treatment in SuSE and Red Hat? I'm mystified.

Fuzznuts,

No, I'm not putting the computer into standby. I've done some research on this question since I posted last and have been able to determine that somehow Microsoft OSs keep power running to the PCI bus and thereby to the network card after shutdown where the Linux kernel does not. Something about this must bypass or override the BIOS, then, because Wake On Lan is off on this machine. Features, eh?
