Router Problems

A friend of mine has Time Warner (Road Runner) cable service. He is also behind a Netgear FR114P Router (http://netgear.com/products/details/FR114P.php).

Now for the past few months, he'd just be surfing along and all the sudden his connection died, and no sites would load. Resetting the cable modem seemed to fix the problem for an hour of two, but as time went on, the time of connectivity dwindled, down to the point where the connection only works for a few minutes. The strange part is that the problem only happens when browsing websites. IE, Firefox, Opera, any browser, still has the problem.

His dad took in the modem to the Time Warner office and got it replaced about a week ago, but no cigar. Finally we just tried hooking the modem up straight to the computer. No problems whatsoever, been working for quite a few hours now.

So before we replace the router, has anyone had experience with this? I really have no idea what to do, except go get a new router, but wasting $50 on something that could be fixed isn't part of my plan.

First off, I hope the computer has firewall software protecting it from worm and hack attacks at the moment. You guys try updating the firmware on the router yet?

I've looked and looked on the Netgear site, but can't find a download for the firmware.

edit: Nevermind, finally found it.

Yep, that sounds like a dying router. I had the same problem w/ my Linksys and once I replaced it, everything is fine again.
