Yesterday I bought a dsl router (my first one). The US Robotics 8000A (8000-02).
The case of the router is black metallic and it seems that it runs VERY hot. I haven't mesured it exactly, but its hard to touch it for more than some seconds(but not imposible, you can't get a burn or anything.) Is this normal?

Email 3Com and ask. I would not expect it to be normal for it to be so hot you can't leave a hand on it, that would be something of a hazard, and just plain not good for the system.

Well, as i said it is not imposible to leave your hand on it, you can't get a burn. But its only barely posible.
I emailed usr, but since today is sunday I don't think they will reply today. Should I just leave it working until i get a reply (its working properly) or should i unplug it (and rewire everything again )

No reply from USR yet. I believe the temperature of the surface of the router is around 55-70 degrees Celsius.

I had a router that was really, really hot (could not touch the hottest part for more than 20 seconds) and it lasted at least 5-6 years. It did finally die, but at that point I could care less.

It was passively cooled, by the way.

yes, It is passively cooled, no funs or anything. It has some holes on the case and probably this is the reason it is metallic. I hope mine lasts for 5-6 years too !!

Most home devices are passively cooled. The metallic case is just sturdier, it isn't really transferring heat enough to consider it a heatsink device, since it doesn't touch any chips so it still depends on air passing over them. The heat of the metal is just due to the radiating heat from the chip. My stuff does get pretty warm, but not to the point that I'd need to remove my hand after any length of time.

Routers in a metal case will be a bit hotter, but it should not be hot to the touch...return your router and get a different one.
