Routers. I am confused

I recently bought a Linksys Cable/DSL router (the 4 port model). I don't have DSL service yet, and was hoping to use the router temporarily as a switch (since it's built in). I have file sharing working, but for some reason, starcraft doesn't seem to work. Is this a problem with the router or my ipx/spx setup?

Ok, so I assume then you believe the problem is with my ipx/spx settings. If so, then I will just tweak along until I can get it running.

Furthermore, is it possible for me to share my dialup connection across this router? How would I go about doing this? I have win2k while the other computer has win98se. I have the internet sharing option on for the dialup connection, but I don't know how to configure the win98se computer to use this.

You can share, but you're not going to be doing it using the "router" part of the LinkSys box.

If I had to take an educated guess, I'd say that the LinkSys is a five port switch (which they already make) and two port router. One port of the router is hard-wired into one of the switch ports (hence, only four usable ports on the switch, instead of the five that are normally available).

To do modem sharing, you'll be using just the switch part of the LinkSys. The switching part will work regardless of whatever layer 3 protocol is being used, or what layer 3 subnet is being used (you can run multiple IP subnets over the same physical switch).

Yeah, that's what I surmised. I got internet sharing working! cool...

But now is the problem with ipx/spx. I had it working previously, but with another win98se system. I'll just have to tweak around. Thanks for the replies, guys!

ON MY ROUTER, I HAD TO CONFIG THE TELNET MENU TO ALLOW SOME GAMES TO WORK THROUGH IT. What I can't understand about your post is that you have modems not network cards??? (modem sharing??)(internet sharing).
I grateful mine finally works right, I'm not touching it unless I have to.
