Royal DaVinci PDA for $49 delivered

For bragging rights ("look: I got a PDA for $49!&quot it's OK.
It was cheaper a few months ago at Staples on closeout with
coupon. (I think it was $30 delivered then).

BUT in the real world, I didn't even think this was a good deal
at $30. The DaVinci is basically a dog, and its operating system
is incompatible with Palm OS or Windows CE, which means when you
realize it sucks--and you WILL realize it sucks--you won't have
any simple upgrade path to the next PDA you purchase.

Bottom line: I'd only buy one of these if you simply cannot afford
anything better...

I bought one from Staples on the $49 deal. When it worked, it was great! Unfortunately, it lasted only 12 hours on a set of batteries.

We know said Royal Olivetti. Upgrade the OS they said. Oh, you have the black CD! Maybe you can't upgrade!

Couldn't upgrade OS. Went back to Staples B&M. Traded even up for a DV-3 (newer model, same stats). Giant blotch in the backlight. Brought it back.

Next one, different giant blotch in backlight. Brought it back.

Next one, DOA. Never passes calibration.

One more time..... blotch in the backlight.

Returned it and got my money back. Going to buy a Palm.

Called Royal Olivetti. They said, "why didn't you call us about the backlight? You could have sent us the unit and we would have fixed the blotches and sent it back to you. We know about the blotches."

My response to them, stop selling junk with known defects.

Don't bother with this PDA. Use $ off at Staples and get a Palm or Visor.

Not a hot deal, I also purchased this from Staples when the cleared them out, exchanced it for the DV3 because the first one wouldn't update OS, the DV3 has some blocthy backlight areas like PolaroidPaul said (mine isn't too bad) It now sits on my desk collecting dusk as Royal has no software for it. :| Not bad for the $30 I paid, but nothing more than a fancy address book and calculator imho.

I just returned it to Staples and upgraded to my Visor. That was a far better option, especailly if you still want a PDA. BTW... I got the same blotch problem, after my second one I just returned them and gave up.

Mine worked it just that I hated it. I don't think it works all that well.

You'll want to stay away from this one. One of my friends tried for 4 months to use this beast It kept erasing his information when ever he synched it with his pc had it sent back twice. This thing is a piece of junk

OK, I guess I'll be the only chump who has a *GOOD* experience with this PDA. I use it for school, keep track of due dates, etc. I nabbed it at Staples from the last time. Anyways, it does sync with Outlook 2000 just fine. It's still on the same set of batteries (I use it 3 days a week)and no splotches, calibration probs, or anything. From what I understand, one bad thing is that when the batteries die, you have to u/l it back up from Outlook since it forgets everything. I just CANNOT see myself dropping 300 bux for what I use it for and do not feel a need to play games on it or (for God's sake) take pictures with it...
Also, if I do recall, I did get the "right" CD with it; forgot which color. But I still have not gotten my damn free keyboard though.
To sum it up: as long as you do not need "hard-core planning" grab one. And if it isn't for you...drop in on fleabay. 'nuff said.
