RT-N56U router problems...

This is a continuation of what i thought was a modem problem from last week. I discovered the router mentioned above seems to drop the connection randomly. I changed it for my old router and connection is rock solid. Now i wonder if this router is junk or can be repaired. It has the latest firmware installed. when the connection drops i can still access thru the computer...not sure if i should look for the nearest bin or try to trouble shoot?

Take everything off the Router, leave only one wired computer.

Reset the Router, make sure that it configured correctly after Boot and try.

If it still disconnecting Get a new Wireless Router.

If it does not disconnect add the rest of the Network one at time to be able to id what causes the trouble.

Otherwise given that the v can be found on ebay for $30 it might be that it is the time to get Better Wireless Router.

It could be the power brick, especially if you've had it for 2-3 years, or it stays on all the time (OK, why wouldn't it), or was in a fairly warm environment.

Had that happen to some of my routers after a few years. I had to go to ebay and buy a few AC adapters for them, then they were practically as good as new.

I'd highly suggest Asus Merlin firmware: https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca (try factory reset then flash, then another factory reset and then set it up and see if it's fixed.)

However make sure the power adapter isn't going out first as you don't want to brick it if the power fails.

Try removing any caked on dust on the heatsink.... Usually 70c-ish is normal on these ARM routers.

So finally I got tired of messing around with this very flaky router, tried various firmware etc, and the problem continued. tried to get asus change it on warranty but they did not seem very willing.I bought a d-link to replace it....hope this one will work out ok.
