3 grand is pretty damn expensive for something that still has wires. I'd like to see somebody tear them apart because I bet they're not doing anything much different than generic $30 earbuds to be worth the 100 times markup.

Man, audiophiles are so easily separated from their money. I wish I had started making stupid expensive cables or something 10 years ago.

the stax headphones are the real deal but I didnt like any of the ear buds. They are better then cheap ear buds though. $3000 better? not to me.

The one thing you never want to do with high end audio, is buy the stuff brand new. My AK player and all AK players are really over priced from the get go. But as long as people continue to buy them at those insane prices, they wont come down. I am lucky to know people to where I was able to trade for my player without any cost to me, except shipping it to someone.

The issue at hand is ultimately the end user/listener is at the mercy of the supplier of stereo mixed recordings.
Could you imagine the potential if it were possible to obtain the original discrete tracks and the end user could mix/tailor to their liking?

As for higher quality/bitrate/formats the law of diminishing returns rapidly shows these are not only unnecessary but prohibitively expensive. Audiophiles with much more money than brains included. I suppose if it does something they can *see* and the explanation unfolds as its improving the sound, they fall for hook, line, and sinker. Aren't those (sinkers) cast from lead? Thought so!

In the digital domain it certainly doesn't help to widen the constraints. Producers have known this for years. Even in the analog world. But how many folks have a Studer/Otari/etc. in their home?

Don't even get me started on modern mastering techniques.

Lulz like any consumer is going to actually mix their own music, not to mention rights owners would never allow that.

<--- grew up in an electronic parts retailer /mid level supplier.

I remember black and white tv tubes pack in straw and wooden crate.

My lumin streamer is supposedly going to support MQA with a firmware upgrade in the future. I'm skeptical but I will at least try it out when I am able to, I haven't had a chance to hear MQA yet. A lot of the guys over at audiosharks forum claim they like it over normal flac/dsd, but who knows if they are partial opinions or not...

Some consumers would, but yeah, admittedly a very, very small percentage of the market.

Ugh the loudness war.

But when most people listen on cellphone pack-in earbuds or Beats, does it really matter if they crank the gains and clip the spikes to a square?

Yes! Definitely yes! Especially with sealed or customs. The reduction in noise floor means that lower levels can be enjoyed and dynamic range should always be preserved. Modern junk with nearly level crest factor is about equal to listening to the drone of a never ending hydraulic power pack running - a big 3MW one! That's the kind of stuff that makes sane folks go crazy and do bad things.
