he actually would probably love to give me a routine but he is smart enough not to. He's my doc and that is not his responsibility.

So he's probably not a real sports doctor then...he should have exercises for rehabilitation or a staff/associate member to refer too.

He's a doctor, not an exercise physiologist. Doctors are typically good with injuries and pathologies, but less so with writing customized workout plans. Any of the workout plans posted in the thread, including the one you posted, will give the OP great results.

But as both not a doctor nor exercise physiologist you trump them all.

A good sports doctor will know exercises or someone they can confer with.

At least this is how they do it in S. Florida.

That's not true at all. A sports doctor addresses sports injuries and is more likely to prescribe active rehabilitation than "Take this and stay off of it for 4 weeks." Nearly all doctors outsource rehabilitation to physical therapists. They very infrequently have them on staff.

Stamina. I have none. After 5-10 minutes on the treadmill (I found that if I take a break after 5 and stretch out my legs, I do ok), then 15-20 minutes of lifting, I'm done. I make sure to drink plenty of water and have *nearly* quit smoking but its like I have no gas left in my tank. Then about 20 minutes after I leave the gym, I'm ready to go again. Do I just need to be patient or is there something I can do?

Also, since I am most worried about losing my belly and man boobs, should I do a few sets of situps and pushups in the morning?

my doc actually has a physical therapy department in his office. He gave me the leg lifts to do for my knee instead of doing surgery or giving me pills. With that said, its not his job to give me a workout routine. Why would it be? He's my doctor, not my personal trainer.

Just to shut Alke up:

and yes, my doc is Dr. Kornhole

I'd keep going then at home...it's obvious you have a lot of rebuilding to do.

situps are pretty worthless for abs. Crunches and leg lifts are better, but still aren't going to burn fat...neither will pushups. They will definitely help with endurance though so if you are willing to do them, do them.

Build yourself up and just start lifting hard. Best way to lose weight for me. Plus the more I lift, the more energy I have during the day and easier time I have sleeping and then sleeping well.

updated the OP. Does anyone know of an FSA approved scale? I need a decent scale and want to spend my flex dollars instead of cash

get your doc to help.

Seriously? Do you ask your private practice psychologist for help with a research project? No. Because it's not their job. You don't just go to a doctor for every menial question you have. How should he know about scales? Sports med doctors address problems. They aren't experts on products that track weight. Go to Sears if you want that.

Damn dude you serious?

They way it sounds is the OP is seeing 'someone' already for issues. He could easily run it by the doc and they'd either know or not know. I am hoping he is seeing a sports doc instead of just a general practitioner.

But of course, lowly MD's have nothing on your breadth of knowledge.

I needed an arm guard. I asked my ortho for one and he prescribed it. $200 brace off the internet, $400 list. Got it for free with the insurance I already pay for.

Doctors are typically pretty busy. You'd be wasting their time by asking such a menial question. MD's know their shit, but if I asked a mechanic about cooking tools, what do you think he would respond? Asking some sort of nutritionist would be a more relevant query.

You asked your orthopedic surgeon about a SUPPORTING apparatus. If he asked the doctor about braces and such, it'd be perfectly understanable. Answering questions about a scale isn't a doctor's job. It's either a salesperson's or the internet's.

You must go to some cattle farm type of doctor then. Fortunately I do not and can actually ask my doctor, a sports doctor; questions about my activities and get recommendations.

Also for my FSA I have been able to get them to give me recommendations and even coupons on items that qualify.

It's funny though since you are answering tons of technically things without even a degree yet feel a doctor is unqualified/unknowing of recommending a scale that may qualify for an FSA expense or even possibly help get one approved (which isn't hard since it's technically coming out of your pocket anyway).

Last I checked, my sports doc is also my general; if I have a weight problem I think he'd know about corrections and likewise a scale to track it. A nutritionist should also indeed know, but many are not seeing one of those regularly. If the OP was then that would be a good resource.

It's obvious you are on a mission to reply in disagreement to any thread I post.

I said a doctor is not typically well-versed on weighing apparatuses. I didn't say I knew any better, now did I? Those with expansive knowledge of the human body do not necessarily know about certain tools used to quantify their measurements. Last time I checked, sports doctors were frequently referred to and not typically general practitioners (at least where I'm from). Try polling every doctor you visit from now on about their knowledge on scales. It will be far from their knowledge of the human body.

no shit...however; getting one to give a recommendation on picking up something on your FSA and chances are they will either know or be able to refer you to someone.

I saw your link...I was replying to SC who yet again is just in a pissing match that only he can be the health guru here.

It's very possible your doctor or the PT's on staff can get a scale recommeneded for you to be covered under FSA.

I am not trying to fight with you, if you want to follow SC's nutsack around go ahead though.

I have been through it, studied this crap for 7 years, and have been doing it since my teens.

I am 38....not barely into my 20's and think I have all of life figured out.

Why don't you two either find a way to get along, meet up and trade punches or trade reacharounds? Whatever you do...just drop the pissing contest. You act like I'm the new hot chick at school and you are both trying to hump me.

Next question: I have carpal tunnel pretty bad in both wrists. Are there any kinds of braces meant for lifting/working out? I have the ones I wear at night but they are a bit bulky to wear while working out.

lil help?

I just wanted to provide some of my own perspective since there was some great advice here but as far as I can tell none of it came from some one else suffering from CTS. I've had carpal tunnel in both wrists for almost two years now, I also have tennis elbow in my left hand on top of that. I had the carpal tunnel release surgery about 9 months ago in my right (primary) hand.

I workout exclusively with dumbbells currently and find that they don't put as much wear and tear on my wrists. If you haven't tried benching with those you can always give that a shot.

Also, ice is your best friend. I try to get my wrists iced as soon after a workout as possible. I have some cheap Walgreens ice packs that have Velcro straps on them that fit my wrists perfectly. I will ice for 3, 15 minute sessions with a 5 minute break between each 15min. block. During those five minutes I do some wrist stretches my Dr. gave me that she referred to as "wall walking" (I can't find a good example of this online though).

Additionally this is not a stretch specifically for CTS at all, but it personally gives me a lot of relief when my wrists start really bothering me:
http://www.exrx.net/Stretches/ChestGeneral/Doorway.html

And if you haven't tried out an alternatives for your CTS there are things that can work to manage your condition. I was not satisfied with the results of my surgery and wanted to try out some alternatives prior to having surgery done on my other hand. I found a lot of relief from seeing a Naprapath (more specific to Illinois; like a combination of Chiropractor and Massage Therapist). With a combination of Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation, Gua Sha, and cervical adjustments my left hand is in better shape than my right despite having not had surgery on it. That also helped me avoid another 12 week period of lifting absolutely nothing which would be required from another surgery.

I didn't see it mentioned in the rest of the thread but if your have poor posture that's something else you can work on that may or may not benefit your CTS. Improving it will never hurt though and it's an easy enough thing to work on if it's a deficiency.

ok so after 6 months of being a slob, I am 30 pounds heavier. I'm at 230 now and I need to get back in shape. I ran into some personal issues that mentally drained me, but I am ready to come back with a vengeance.

I need to get back to the basics. My main concern is still diet. according to the link in the fat loss sticky, I'm going to need 2171 calories a day for my BMR. That sounds aweful high. What would happen if I kicked that down to 1500? I'm putting together a meal plan for this next week and I'm planning on going 30/30/20 with the 20% being carbs. Does that sound good?

I also got some really good wrists supports that should help a ton with working out. Bench presses or anything with bent wrists is for sure out. Are there any downsides to taking a couple Tylenol before working out to help numb the aches?

I look forward to some abuse from you guys but some help on getting my calorie count right. I still work a desk job so 2100 calories a day sounds like way too much.

2100 is your BMR. That's what your body burns if you do no other activity. However, you also have the energy used while digesting food and the energy used while moving your body. 2100 is the lowest you should go because all of your body processes will be unable to cope optimally with any stress. Research has shown that people who dip their calories too much can reduce their BMR by over 30%. That means that even though you cut more calories out, you lose less weight. It's more worth it for you to eat 2100 calories and stay on par rather than cut it more because you gained more weight. Don't be impulsive - this is the long run we're talking about. If you're 230 pounds and you have a relatively sedentary lifestyle, you still easily burn 3000 calories per day. A 1500cal deficit per day is unacceptably high at your weight. I don't even know how you're judging 2100cal as being high. High for what? A 50 year old, 100lb woman? Well, sure. For a man your age and size, hell no - not even while losing weight.

Also you said 30/30/20... where's the other 20%? 30/30/40 would be fine if you had good carb sources. Also, taking Tylenol before a workout isn't exactly a good idea. Some NSAIDs can actually decrease the strength of connective tissue. I believe Tylenol only acts on the brain, but even then it can still modify the brain's response to exercise and thereby the secretion of certain hormones. If you're uncomfortable, that's ok. If something hurts, don't just take pills and forget about it. You're doing something wrong if you hurt when you lift.
