I know some of you are curious how I got the name: Rudy Toody. I also realize that some of you don't give a rat's asp, so you people can go read another post.
With the US Labor Day holiday weekend coming up, which in Seattle means: Bumbershoot, I thought I would take this occasion to explain the origin of Rudy Toody.
Bumbershoot is an arts and music festival held every Labor Day weekend where Seattle-ites celebrate the transition from the warm rainy season to the cold rainy season.
For 21 years I worked at Bumbershoot as a Gate Manager. Gates 2T and 2P to be precise. The gates are identified by the suffixes: T for ticket, P for passes, and V for vehicle. As you can see, this would cause some confusion over the radios.
A few years ago I decided to write a comic novel called: Bumbershoot -- The Novel. The italicized passage above was to be on the introduction page.
Now, part of the process of writing humorous stories is to create minor characters that pop up now and then to add comic relief. So, to capitalize on the confusion with the gate numbers, I came up with the character: Rudy Toody. I expected Rudy to respond to calls for 2T with: "It's not Tooty! It's Toody! Rudy Toody!"
A festival of this size-- it is one of the largest in the US-- requires the labor of hundreds of employees and volunteers, and many months of preparation. I figured it would take about 4 years to research all the facets of this festival before I could begin writing.
However, the production company did not ask me back for a 22nd year. "Why?" I asked. "Because you are weird," they replied.
I decided that if I am to spend 4 years researching a comic novel, it won't be about Bumbershoot. After a great deal of thought about what I could write about that would be funny and interesting to research, I decided to write: Aversion Therapy.
This will be a novel about a clinic that uses aversion therapy to cure nymphomania.
I have finished my 4 years of research and I will begin writing as soon as I recover.
