I see a few sites reporting that a new Ipad will be available in February or March. A cheaper version with the new version (ipad 3) coming out in October. Anyone know how viable this is?

I just ordered an Ipad 2 16GB WiFi, but now I am thinking that I should send it back and wait a month or two. Even if I am not sure if they will release a new one. My reason for needing an Ipad 2 can wait until March, should I wait? What do you guys think?

I don't believe they'll release an iPad3 in Feb/March and then drop the price of it in October for no reason.

If we've seen anything from Apple's launch plans, Feb/March iPad3 is released, iPad2 gets cheaper. Then nothing for the next 12 months until iPad4, repeat....

They said there was an iPad 2 HD in Sept of last year, too...

I'd take these rumors with a healthy grain of salt.

Wonder if we'll see a 7" version around the $299 price mark this spring.

I'd just hang on to it and use it. Apple products have really good resale values. If you decide you need the newest and greatest, just sell your iPad and get the newest.

Don't forget that even though they might announce it, it might not be easily obtainable for some time after that.

Im all for THAT !!!!!
I have iPads both 1 & 2, and a slew of tablets, and I use my 7" tablets the most of any of the larger screen devices I have. Smaller than iPad, but larger than a phone, just perfect. Lighter and less bulky too. Even my 7" nook tablet is used much much more than my iPad, except I really HATE ANDROID.

I suggested apple do a 7" version of the iPad on the apple forums and was hammered by people saying NO NO NO, we don't need that. Apple doesn't want that.

I think apple is making a grave mistake ignoring the 7" device market.
A 7" ipad-like device with 14" hours of battery life, wifi and maybe even 3g or 4g, in my opinion would leave all other 7" tab devices in the dust.
I'd buy one in a wink. And so would all these nay-sayers on the apple forum, if such an apple device was to become reality. And they all damn well know they would jump to buy one...

complete bullshit, don't trust those sources, they said same thing about an ipad refresh around october of last year as well.

7 inch ipad won't happen either, if you read jobs' bio, you'd know the current ipad form factor is set in stone, not gonna change.

they've been talking about a smaller cheaper iphone for ages, and it still hasn't happened, so don't hold your breath on the smaller, cheaper ipad.

if you haven't noticed, apple is dead set against fragmentation, a single sku not only simplifies the manufacturing process, lowers production cost, but more importantly, it simplifies the buyer decision process, you've only got one choice, just pick a color.

Exactly. Apple only releases 1 product a year, so anyone else claiming otherwise is basically trolling for hits.

And the Lord Jobs spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to one, no more, no less. One shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be one. Two shalt thou not count, nor either count thou zero, excepting that thou then proceed to one. Three is right out. Once the number one, being the first number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy iPad of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

The current rumour is that Apple will release an interim iPad 3 with the same A5 CPU but additional features, in the spring, and then re-release a new machine in the fall with the A6. However, I don't buy that rumour.

I personally predict that Apple will release an A6 iPad 3 in the fall only, and then will continue to sell the A5 iPad 2 at the same time for a cheaper price.

I'm waiting for the iPhone 5, in the fall. I'm not a big fan of iPads, at least for the time being. The fact that there is no multi-user account support in iOS is lame. The only reason I now use my iPad 2 more than before is because we got a case for Xmas with integrated Bluetooth keyboard, so basically we're using it like a netbook.

What still gives me pause is the fact that all iPhones AND IPads have been release a year apart from each other. The only exception being the iPhone 4s because of the Japan disaster. So why do people think they will not announce one in March/February?

WTH does the japan disaster have to do with ip4s? All apple shit is made in china.

You'll get an iPad in March. It'll have a retina display. It'll have Siri. The only real question is whether or not it'll have a retina display and Siri AND an A6. If it doesn't, then you'll have to wait until the iPad 4 for that, which, frankly, could very well come out in October.

Apple often times takes cues from the competition and plays the Milton Berle game. So the real question you have to ask here is does Apple think the tablet competition is significant enough to where they need to stick an A6 in the iPad 3 for it to reign supreme? If not, you likely won't get one.

I doubt they would release an HD ipad without the A6. I would think a retina display like 2560x1600 would be seriously underpowered without a processor revision and may be underpowered even with one.

I have a nagging feeling that Apple is going to announce new products soon myself. It's why I am unloading my iPad 2 now, while it's worth something.

I'm thinking that the iPad 3 will only have minor changes, like better cameras and Siri support. If we're lucky, they'll add a 4G LTE radio in there as well.

I think you've got it backward.

It'd look at it like this:

Feature / % chance of happening:
--------------------------------------

Siri / 99%
Better Camera / 95%
Retina Display / 85%
Some sort of speed bump (but not A6) / 70%
A6 / 50%
4G LTE / 5%

Thunderbolt - 10%
3D - 5%

I guess the timing depends on:

1) Whether the new iPad gets the A6 or not.
2) If it gets the A6, when the A6 is ready.

The A6 will likely require a 28 nm process. TSMC claims it is now producing commercial product on the 28 nm process, and apparently so is Samsung. However, nVidia which has actually provided a 28 nm GPU roadmap only has some of the budget GPUs coming out earlier in 2012. The higher GPUs are coming out mid-year or else later in the year.

What does this mean? I dunno exactly actually. However, it does make me question an early iPad 3 release. I'm not convinced Apple would release an A5 iPad 3 because I think Apple will only release a single new iPad line this year. I am guessing that iPad 3 will have the A6, and it may mean that it might be later than February/March due to production ramping issues on 28 nm.
