Nobody here too. Although I do use it for Blu-ray as well. It is truly the center of entertainment in our entertainment center. Plays my PS, PS2, and PS3 library of games. It also serves as an upscaling DVD player, computer file player (via Tversity over my network), and Blu-ray player.

Once that was gone, Sony started to cut more and more features while keeping the price about the same. The last PS3 I recommended to others was the MGS4 PS3 because it had most of what the original PS3 had minus SACD support and full BC (but 80%+ was good enough). Now, it's just not that tempting unless you are just buying it to play games, which if that's the case, it has some HEAVY competition with the 360. And if it were just for games, I'd get the 360 hands down, mainly because of XBox Live. It's light years ahead of the PSN.

But all that being said, having both is the best option. I love being able to play whatever game I like. And the PS3 has some really great games. I think I have just about all the exclusive PS3 games and I enjoy them all. Heavenly Sword was one of my favorites.

If the launch consoles didn't have full BC, I'd have myself an XBox 360. I have a HTPC, which can also play Blu-ray discs. Also, the 360 can do pretty much all the multimedia streaming my PS3 can do, even though I don't like the 360 interface as much. Finally, after playing Street Fighter 4, I would gladly pay $50/year for a PSN equivalent to XBox Live. Sony needs to throw some serious money in getting their Online experience on par with the 360.

they made another announcement locally. the PlayStation store in SF is closing today rather than the summer when their lease comes up.

ps2 related question here: I'm finally ready to grab one (cheap) and start on their stock of high quality RPGs. If I buy a used one, are there any known defects I should watch out for? Also I know there were at least two different version (thick and thin) what are the differences between them?

Early fat PS2s had a design defect that caused disc read errors to occur eventually. It was usually possible to fix the problem by opening the console and adjusting it, but the problem would eventually come back.

The fat PS2 has a tray-loaded DVD player. The skinny PS2 has a top-loaded DVD player with a flip-up lid. IIRC the fat PS2 had an internal power supply, skinny PS2 has an external power brick. Skinny PS2 is RIDICULOUSLY small, I was really blown away when I saw it for the first time. Skinny PS2 has a network adapter built-in. Fat PS2 has room for a hard drive, skinny PS2 does not. Not sure what legitimate uses there are for the hard drive.

I'd get the skinny PS2.

I think only the MMO Final Fantasy XI truly required the hard drive. Other games like SOCOM made use of the hard drive but it wasn't required.

Thanks for the info. I'm just going to watch for something on Craigslist and was wondering if there was one to to really avoid.

It is hard to get very excited about a console that has wired controllers and requires memory cards even at such a low price. How quickly we get spoiled. lol

One more PS2 question since you guys are being helpful, are my PS1 controllers/memory cards still useful or do they need to be replaced?

At times I wish I had wired controllers...not often, but having your controller die in the middle of a fight/race/etc sucks. I like being able to power on the console from the comfort of my sofa though.

PS2 is still a great console, I too am just now getting into it. Gonna hopefully get FF10/12, GoW 1/2, and Tekken Tag/5. That's really about all I want to play on it though.

Oh yeah, I think you're right. The newest ones. So the ones on store shelves now should have an internal power supply.

I know the disc read error popped up on older fat PS2s, haven't heard about it with the slim units.

...and dozens of great games for $10-20 new (or $5-10 on eBay), don't forget about that.

Memory cards:
- For PS2 games get the 2-pack of Sony brand cards, off-brand can get corrupted.
- For PS1 games you do need PS1 memory cards.

Besides JRPGs and God of War, don't forget about Katamari Damacy and Ratchet & Clank. I'm playing R & C Going Commando now and it still looks good on my 50" DLP.

I only got mine as a birthday gift to myself because all my long distance relatives used to send me money.

I'm not sure why Sony had to announce in advance that they were going to announce something so trivial, or why they even needed to hold an event to announce this at all. I keep getting the feeling that Sony isn't putting the effort into their gaming division that they once did. Seems this generation has been left on the back burner. If you need proof, just look at the PSP, or the PSN Store.

Wow, a price drop on a nearly decade old system. Was Sony able to drop the price without taking components away from the PS2?

lol on this one but remember, they took out firewire, no harddrive capabilities, but hell, they didn't need to drop the price cus it still sold so well. Imagine how much money they made on the systems, let alone on the games. Now dropping down to $99 is ganna spur sales even more and I'm sure it costs less than $99 to make it so yea. The PS3 on the other hand........

I had a launch PS2 that suffered from DREs. Sony got sued and lost a class action lawsuit, so they fixed/replaced it for me...all I had to do was pay shipping.
