Best GDC tidbit that I can share: A little Fishie told me about an upcoming $100 price break for ALL PS3 SKU's. Full software BC too?

The biggest thing that scares me about these rumors is that April Fool's is so close.

Apparently that is a fake account.

The real David Jaffe's twitter is http://twitter.com/djaffe

Figures. I don't think we'll ever see full software BC in the PS3. Sony took BC out to save money, it doesn't make sense for them to spend a ton of money on development of software BC.

I would pay $20-30 for the BC software, and I think a lot of others would too. If they received revenue, it would make more sense to support the games.

It wasn't all software, it was part software and part hardware. I think the graphics chip was hardware.

If I remember the progress correctly:

the EE/GS were both on a single chip for the launch 60gb PS3s.

The first 80gb PS3 cut costs a bit, as they evolved the PS2-in-a-PS3 into just the GS. It was a partial software solution that offloaded the Emotion Engine work to the Cell.
From there, well... bye-bye hardware. I cannot imagine they have no plans to bring full software BC. Probably waiting for PS2 sales to fall flat.

Whatever it was, there was a real reason for a drop in backward compatibility between the 60gb and first 80gb SKU. I can't remember what they changed, but I do know the PS3 started with basically the whole PS2 on a chip, with the EE/GS combined.

If I could get a new PS3 with full bc that upscales nicely, I'd immediately buy a PS3.

There isn't much in the way of PS3 games I want to play and I'm backlogged about 6 X360 and 4 PS2 games anyway. Also I absolutely don't care about Blu-Ray. My Pioneer DVD player upscales my DVDs so well I don't know why I'd ever need one.

but just the ability to play through P3, P4, and God of War 2 on my HD TV without it looking like total crap would be enough for me to get a PS3.

I really hope that they add BC to the PS3. I think it was a huge mistake to eliminate it.

How many PS2 owners eventually will upgrade to a current-generation console? Just guessing, but maybe 90%? How many PS2 owners will have an incentive to upgrade to a non-BC PS3 versus a 360, besides brand loyalty? Zero.

If they feature BC in a new PS3 (with upscaling), many PS2 owners will have an added incentive to pick the PS3 over the 360. And many non-PS2 owners will look at the gazillion cheap PS2 games, and decide that BC is the deciding factor in choosing a PS3 over a 360.

/hugs his MGS4 PS3

Sony just put out a statement saying they are not planning any PS3 price cuts.

Gamestop sells used 60gb PS3s for $430, so get on it! I bought one a year ago, and it works like a champ. You'd think from the way people are talking that 60gbs are just totally unavailable.

If they just announce a release date of a game or a ps2 price cut it would be the lamest thing they could do.

Ditto. I would definitely pay for software BC.

As a 360 and PS3 owner, I can say the PS3 is a worth console. I just have more friends on Live than PS3, so I buy more of my games on 360.

I know but I'm not buying a used system especially when if it breaks I gotta pay Sony 150. Either that or buy some extended warranty from Gamestop. I understand that old ones are out there but I can't bring myself to buy anything used besides a house or car for that much.

I would like to see what kind of house or car you can buy for $430.

Single-minded, and ignorant thing to say. Not to mention wrong. Some people are so blinded and bias, is sad.

I know Blu-Ray isn't for everyone, but before you write it off completely, I encourage you to borrow a player (and a good BD disc) from a friend and try it on your HDTV via HDMI. You never know what you are missing unless you actually see it at home. The PS3 is a fine DVD upscaler, but Blu-Ray really looks a lot better. Also, the sound is supposedly much better.

I think Sony's thrown in the towel on this generation's console war. Sony execs can talk about "value" versus price all they want, but their numbers suck.

Oh well, I guess it's best not to have any single company win the console wars for consecutive generations. Spurs innovation.

I pretty much use my PS3 as a blu-ray player. If I like a demo I may buy the game for it, but only if it's not available on the 360. I hate the PS3 controller.

I somewhat agree with you. I'm kind of in the opposite camp of the guy you're quoting though. I want to buy a PS3 to play games but don't want to pay for the Blu-Ray.

Obviously what I'm saying is the only thing I'd buy used for that amount of money or more is a car or house.

Adding BC would probably make sense to the people that have PS2's now. I have a 60gb PS3 and i dont even use the BC because i never had a PS2. Im thinking about getting both God of Wars to get some usage out of it.

I got my PS3 60GB because it was the whole package, full BC, media slots, 4 USB ports, SACD support, AWESOME Blu-ray player, great media center, movie rental service, and of course PS3 games. Once that was gone, Sony started to cut more and more features while keeping the price about the same. The last PS3 I recommended to others was the MGS4 PS3 because it had most of what the original PS3 had minus SACD support and full BC (but 80%+ was good enough). Now, it's just not that tempting unless you are just buying it to play games, which if that's the case, it has some HEAVY competition with the 360. And if it were just for games, I'd get the 360 hands down, mainly because of XBox Live. It's light years ahead of the PSN.

But all that being said, having both is the best option. I love being able to play whatever game I like. And the PS3 has some really great games. I think I have just about all the exclusive PS3 games and I enjoy them all. Heavenly Sword was one of my favorites.

Update: The PS2's price was cut from $129.99 to $99.99. No PS3 announcement was made. Bummer.

Typical Sony sticking it's head in the sand and blundering every opportunity they can get.

I'm tempted to pick up a PS2 again. Had one a few years ago, but sold it after it sat in the closet for months because I didn't have a decent TV. Might be worth it to pick up a TV and a PS2 while I want for price cuts on the PS3.
