290x and 390 at the same clocks have almost the same performance, seams they have the same number of shaders.

Wish people would stop posting this. These are fabricated benchmarks and are in no way actual tests of those cards.

Okay, so it looks like everything below Fiji is going to be okay, but nothing spectacular.

If you just bought a 290X, you probably won't feel bad about it.

Now we need to figure out Fiji.

I have not seen thread crapping on this scale in any thread, and not get modded I should learn from a master.

Had the following dream last night:

I'm looking at some site's launch day review. AMD's HBM card is trading game wins with the 980 Ti. Think "Well that's OK I guess". But wait, that's the cut down model. Review says they decided to show the full chip numbers separately because they are amazing.

My random dream from reading too many rumor posts. Posting since it has the same level of certainty, too.

AMD listed the 290X as a 250W card. If they measure everything exactly the same way than it should mean a 42 watt drop.

and its overclocked for that 208W. if true. That's huge in my book. 100MHz over stock boost iirc.

seems MSI uses lower TDP

Ultimately, I will not be staggered if this: http://www.chiphell.com/thread-1182382-1-1.html turns out to be R9 390X. Captain Jack name is somewhat connected to Caribbean Islands which were called for very long time Pirate Islands .

And if the distributor who posted on that forum in some other threads is correct, the R9 390X should have price areound 399$.

It's really huge. We know that memory is a big part of a 290X's power budget... considering that they got the memory to 1500MHz plus a 100MHz OC on the core while getting the power figure down to 208w is a huge advance in perf/watt for Hawaii/Grenada.

On par with the 480->580 treatment GF100 got back in the day I'd say, maybe even better. I hope this Hawaii revision, Grenada, also overclocks better! It'd be nice to see 1200MHz not that out of reach as it is right now for a 290/x.

6.2 TFLOPs from that MSI card with 208W TDP, counting if it really is 2816 GCN core part. Quite impressive IMO.

I hope Apple will get it down to 125W of TDP at 90% of performance, and put in Mac Pro .

Ah its as suspected, MSI is just full of it. At least they are consistent. 208W yeah right....

I'm not sure that I understand where you think the derailing is occurring.

This is supposed to be a thread for discussion about rumors surrounding the upcoming AMD graphics card launch and, surprisingly, for the most part right now it appears to be on topic and not being disrupted by troublemakers (recognizing that "for the most part" is about as good as it's ever going to get here).

I am doubting those pics. The MSI specs on their site is 250W now but maybe it was 208 earlier. shrug

exactly my thoughts. I am confident AMD has done significant improvements to architectural efficiency over Tonga in terms of perf/sp, perf/sq mm and perf/watt. My expectation is perf/sp has gone up 25-30%. Tonga laid the foundations but fundamentally but AMD left the core shader architecture untouched which I believe has now got a really good rework. Anyway in 4 days we will know what AMD has done.

Well, Trinidad if nothing else would seem to be a straight rebrand. Besides the CF bridge, the die itself looks exactly the same as the current Curaçao die.
The Tonga board looks identical as well, with the 380X being exact same layout (V314 v1.2) as the MSI R9 285 (V314 1.0) but with different trace routing.

Too bad there's no board shots of the 390X.

Best case scenario is 390x is GCN 1.2 like tonga and is made in GF.
Then it will by slighly faster than GTX980.

If its only Hawaii GCN 1.1 made in GF instead TSMC then no it will be slower than GTX980 in 1920x1080 and 2560x1440

390x or fiji? I think everyone is getting confused with the model numbers as I see multiple references that interchange the 390x codename for fiji, which is not accurate.
