Happens all the time, just requires a refresh. My bet is on a new stepping - still GCN 1.1, same layout, just a layer mask or two given some quick optimizations... or, perhaps, AMD just paid TSMC to run a quick optimization based on the original design to tune the chip for a slightly higher frequency range. :wub:

And that is what we have seemingly seen with the R9 390. It's about 8.5% or so faster than the R9 290 clock-to-clock and apparently uses about 40 fewer watts under load with Furmark.

The confusing part is the the 390X benchmarks didn't show any improvement from what one would expect from simply clocking up a 290x... sadly, we don't have any power draw figures for the 390X (yet).

We have no idea which foundry they are using. Even that info is secret.

Your argument make sense BUT since everyone says its a rebrand then by that logic alone there cant be improvements. If there are improvements then everyone saying its a rebrand must be mistaken even wrong and none on internet is wrong ever. Its really confusing atm

I'm guessing that the gaming power usage will be the same. I don't even know why sites bother using Furmark though. Here's a max load that half the time isn't representative of anything since it can be artificially capped through the drivers anyway

Interesting if it isn't a typo, 390/X is rated at 208W.

Note this 290X 208W TDP, nothing has changed.

Also its hidden behind an "average power usage" term.

Yep, its the exact same chips. Same reason why the 15.5 driver even shows the 390/390X cards as 200 series. Only a newer driver notice the changed BIOS. Plus you can flash 290/290X to 390/390X.

Really hope AMD hard launches Fiji/HBM cards today.

If the 390X people have bought is it for high end, this will be the largest non-event I have seen as a gamer. It's been almost two years, my 290 is getting pretty vintage.

I don't want another one, even if the call it a 390 now.

9:22 pm in south korea right now. im guessing the nda lifts 9 pm PT on June 16, and they didn't interpret time zones properly.

I've only seen it as 9pm ET. I checked a few sources and they're all reporting 9pm ET. That doesn't mean we won't see the chip ahead of that though.
