equation dont make sense with this rebrand cant increase clocks and lower tdp not possible.
Happens all the time, just requires a refresh. My bet is on a new stepping - still GCN 1.1, same layout, just a layer mask or two given some quick optimizations... or, perhaps, AMD just paid TSMC to run a quick optimization based on the original design to tune the chip for a slightly higher frequency range. :wub:
And that is what we have seemingly seen with the R9 390. It's about 8.5% or so faster than the R9 290 clock-to-clock and apparently uses about 40 fewer watts under load with Furmark.
The confusing part is the the 390X benchmarks didn't show any improvement from what one would expect from simply clocking up a 290x... sadly, we don't have any power draw figures for the 390X (yet).
