It may seem obvious to us that they'll eventually get nukes, but to hear it from SecDef is sobering.

actually it says
Terrorists are sure to eventually acquire nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told senators Tuesday.

i think they will get/use a chemical or biological weapon before a nuke, the technology is much easier and logistics are simpler, although deployment takes more work

its going to suck when they hit us with that, i really don't want to go through the way i felt sept 11 8am to 6pm again

We have finally exited the fantasy world of the 90's and are now dealing with reality. Excellent.

Very sobering indeed.

On a lighter note, I LOVE to hear Rumsfeld say "Al Queda".

Well, if chemical, biological, or nukes are used, I imagine that the Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington movie, "The Seige", will become reality, and I think it should at that point. We can only gauranty peoples civil liberties soo far. We need to think about the well being of the greater good.

I'm more worried about the sucide bombers in the immediate future. If Israel gives in under the threat of more attacks, it becomes a proven tactic. Then, it will begin to happen in the US.

Count on it.

Well that does suck. I knew it as well but like you say it is sobering when the source is considered.

If the terrorists use any kind of nuke on American soil, you can bet some terrorist-supporting country will get a taste of it...

I agree. While I think they will certainly be trying to put together something really big, turning the U.S. into Jerusalem would be a much more attainable goal. They don't even have to be suicide bombers.

Pre-emptive strike anyone? We do know which countries it is gonna come from. If its such a certainty, why wait for it to strike us?

Preemptive strike? I am glad neither the US nor the USSR believed in that!

Let's see if less powerful countries like India and Pakistan follow MAD or preemptive strike doctrine.

Well, there's a huge difference between the cold war and this situation. We are saying that terrorists WILL get nukes. If they do get nukes, they wont hesitate to detonate it in the US. The Soviets would not have, they weren't crazy. They had 'em because we did, and it equaled out things. So if the terrorists WILL eventually hit us, why should we wait like sitting ducks?

I'm so glad my family lives in a rural area.

So if the terrorists WILL eventually hit us, why should we wait like sitting ducks?

Gosh you're dumb. Maybe because we don't know where the terrorists are? And the most dangerous terrorists are already in the USA. The hijackers were trained in Florida, not Afghanistan, remember?

The terrorists recieved FLIGHT training in Florida. I dont know where they recieved their terrorist indocrination before that. Maybe Afghanistan? But thats all beside the point. They will not develop nuclear capability in Florida. That takes an enormous amount of technology and scientific know-how. Its a bigass project, and it will need to be backed by one country or another. Im sure we all know which countries have the capability and the will to do this.

So, you're for a preemptive strike? Rumsfeld didn't say, "they have nukes, watch out", he said it's inevitable. If we are going to preemptively attack them now based on warnings, you'd think we would've done the same for 9/11?

Remember, Russia had U-boats lining our shores during the cold war with enough nukes on board to destroy many major cities in the U.S. Let us not be paranoid...

One also has to wonder why we have our defense secretary telling us such things. They didn't want us to hear all the warnings pre-9/11, now of all a sudden they feel it's necessary to disseminate the imminent deployment of nuclear arms upon our soil? Why? Is this the propaganda machine in full force, building up the perception of imminent danger so that our citizens will more accept the deployment of another fat man over middle-eastern soil (think about the Japanese propaganda during WWII).

This information now so easily available to us is apocryphal, at best, and I'd question it. What other reason is there to transpose our nation's people into a state of mass hysteria other than to facilitate the rationalization of more offensive measures?

I'm suspect of anything I read these days...

How about the US? The FBI traced the anthrax back to the Ames lab, after all. Maybe it's easier to steal our WMD from us intead of developing them from scratch?

I was listening to a radio talk show today that was questioning this also. The DJ's opinion was that releasing all of this information was a response to all of the criticism Bush and his people have faced regarding supposed knowledge of warnings they had prior to 9/11. Basically, Bush is saying "Fine. You asked for it. I'm going to let you know about every threat that comes our way. Enjoy living in fear".

I don't agree that this is the reason, but it's interesting.

But, as a president, he should then understand that even though everyone says they want to know, they don't *really* want to know. The whole point of our government is to allow it's citizens to remain quiescent and ignorant

It has to be deeper than that. It hardly seems plausible that our president is upset by his citizen's admonishments enough to force them to abscond for fear of attack.
