Had the status quo not changed; Rumsfield would still be there.

With a complete loss of Congress; if Bush is to get anything accomplished he will have to compromise.

Congress will now be able to force his hand; he needs to get some types of appeasement to them. Chaney can not go; Rumsfield is the obvious target.

What would happen if he tapped Webb to be Sec-Of-Def?

I love my friends response to me when I told him this was some nice icing on the cake.

"Icing? We've moved way beyond the f**king icing. We just passed the sprinkles and cherries, and have moved to lacing the damn cake with cocaine!!!"

I like MSNBC's coverage. When the reporter asked about parallelism to Vietnam, you could see Bush search for talking points on Vietnam behind the podium.

Go ahead. Lie to us and and tell us that it didn't happen. After that gets shot down, you can lie yet again and tell us nobody in any position of responsiblity was responsible for the torture that didn't happen, even though it did.

I wish I could watch it. No one lost last night more than he did. His own party will disown him now. 2 whole years as a lame duck is really gonna suck for him. Not that he doesn't deserve it.

Why he didn't resign before the election?

It may have been that they thought him leaving before the election would be a sign that things were going bad and therefore would result in even an even worse result than what we saw.

They were saying on National Review etc that the whole positive attitude was aimed on keeping the troops fired up and going to the phones etc.
Had Rumsfeld left a few weeks ago a lot volunteers might have just given up.
If that had happened the loss could have been even bigger.

This is the one reason I can think of right now. I am sure we shall hear more in the next few days.

My advice to a few of you... as the saying goes... When you make it to the end zone don't act like a fool, but act like you've been there before.

Lame duck? Well that is up to him.

Reagan reached out to the Dems. And Clinton reached out to the Reps. Maybe neither really wanted to....but they sometimes did.

Bush shouldn't be giving speeches, he should be in VA trying to buy the election.

Yeah. It would have meant they had to tell the truth. Couldn't have that, now, could we?

Wouldn't be prudent.

It sounds like Cheney wanted to keep Rumsfeld but Bush decided otherwise. If true, to Bush.

As I said in another thread . . . SoD is a ridiculously difficult job given the abyss of US policy since 2001. Lieberman wouldn't take it due to the political implications but it may be a no-lose situation for Webb.

1) Webb lucked up to win Senate . . . VA didn't want him as much as they didn't want Allen.

2) If he becomes SoD and nothing gets better, he can claim it was his predecessors' fault. Who wouldn't believe it?

3) If he becomes SoD and ANYTHING gets better, he will likely get the credit. Granted, I'm not sure anyone short of Satan could herd the snake pit aka Middle East.

4) Anything close to a face saving 'victory' and withdrawal from Iraq would instantly launch Webb into legitimate 2008 prominence. Granted, it would have to be the Mother of All Miracles considering he would have to fix Iraq and DoD by early Summer 2007 in time to start raising money.

Reagan and Clinton were both better men than Bush Jr.

DING! DING! DING! WINNAR!

That was my thinking exactly--and I'm VERY confident that Rumsfeld offered his resignation 2 weeks ago but was told to wait until after the elections. Its not that Bush was only interested in saving his administration's image at the expense of GOP Congress. Its just that this time around Bush/Rove were so BLINDSIDED by the Dems big win--and now they stand to lose the Senate as well! They honestly didn't think this could happen, and THAT'S what scares me!

Failure to predict Dem victory = just another intelligence failure in the White House

The more I think about it the more it looks like the big mean dog rolling over and exposing its belly to the new Alpha dog, a Italian Greyhound.
