The entire world is going to rejoice at the news. Hopefully there will be a real change in the way the war is run in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Congrat to the Democrats.

Yeah, are you serious? If this is the case...man...he's lost it.

No, those were my words. Bush clearly doesn't like David b/c David is always stickin' it to him.

Gotta admit he's got a sense of humor... but he's a buffoon and a puppet.

Yeah, I know about that video. That was not televised at the time and I know he called some reporter an a-hole or something because he didn't think he was miced.

That quote above is so much worse. This is his first major appearance since his party lost big time and he's replacing Rumsfeld. People are going to be watching him speak. You can't just cuss out a reporter no matter how angry Bush is about the election.

edit: ahh, he didn't say that. He hasn't gone crazy...yet...

I wish I could watch it. No one lost last night more than he did. His own party will disown him now. 2 whole years as a lame duck is really gonna suck for him. Not that he doesn't deserve it.

Lame duck? Well that is up to him.

Reagan reached out to the Dems. And Clinton reached out to the Reps. Maybe neither really wanted to....but they sometimes did.
Uh . . . didn't the GOP impeach Clinton . . . for lying about fellatio?

Rummy versus MADAME SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, NANCY PELOSI as the Wicked Witch of Haight Ashbury. Those would have been some epic battles. Hmm, I wonder if he will still claim executive privilege after she starts serving subpoenas?

I have had two meetings with colleagues today. One is an old academic so he wasn't so excited about Bush changing course. IMO, the old ones are bitter b/c they cannot conceive of how we got Vietnamized twice in 40 years. The other is mid-career academic. She was downright giddy.

I really hope Gates actions earn the confidence and support of the troops and that he does right by them. I hope we have better planning and the situations are safer for our men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq. I also hope it leads to a quicker resolution (whatever that may be) to the situations over there and our troops can be at home with their families in the future.

I know. That's the reason we have impeachment for both of them.

Bush Wants Rumsfeld, Cheney To Stay
President Gives Support To Two Most Criticized Members Of His Cabinet

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2006

(CBS/AP) President Bush said Wednesday he wants Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney to remain in his administration until the end of his presidency, extending a job guarantee to two of the most criticized members of his team.
Bush's lips must have been moving.

If we're lucky, Cheney's next. Then, it'll be time for the Numbnutz In Chief.

Don't forget Rove too. Get rid of them, and Bush will be utterly useless. He'll have no one holding his strings anymore.

Good thing we didn't get that damn flip-flopper Kerry. Anyone who changes his mind is a dumbass. Once you've mad a bad decision, stick to it, no matter how bad it gets! Save your ego at all costs.

I think this is Bush's way of insuring that his convictions can prevail. He knew that in the current political lineup that Rumsfeld's credibility was spent. Rumsfeld has offered to resign several times already. Bush knows the U.S. can't just pull out without all of this messing coming back on home turf. So now was the time for a new pointman. Why it didn't happen before the election I don't know.
That would have shown Bush going back on his word, which would have perhaps swayed more people to not vote Republican. That it came the day after elections says that it was likely a political move.

Stewart and Colbert are going to have a FIELD DAY with this
I predict incredible applause when they mention Rumsfeld's resignation.
Colbert can add this to his freshly minted "Never stay the course" binder.

You should have seen the presidential debates. He was hilarious.
He looked like he was missing part of his frontal cortex.
Some of his pauses were nearly 10 seconds long.

Why he didn't resign before the election?

It may have been that they thought him leaving before the election would be a sign that things were going bad and therefore would result in even an even worse result than what we saw.

They were saying on National Review etc that the whole positive attitude was aimed on keeping the troops fired up and going to the phones etc.
Had Rumsfeld left a few weeks ago a lot volunteers might have just given up.
If that had happened the loss could have been even bigger.

This is the one reason I can think of right now. I am sure we shall hear more in the next few days.

My advice to a few of you... as the saying goes... When you make it to the end zone don't act like a fool, but act like you've been there before.

He obviously did. They just decided to announce it after the election. Or do you think Rummy walked into the oval office this morning and delivered his resignation, and Bush instantly chose Gates to replace him????? He knew for weeks.

Hot damn, this is AWESOME NEWS!!!!

Wow, what a day it's been: checks and balances seem to be back, and the second most incompetent idiot in government is stepping down! Good news for the country, and GREAT news for our troops! I'm stoked!

And I just got free frontstage tickets to Dylan/Raconteurs tomorrow night, backstage passes and all. Is it the moon or something?

Now we just need an ample serving of subpeonas dished out, time to remind the fatcat politicians there's music to face!

Unfortunately, you're right... 2 years in the AF... oh joy.

That said, in terms of civilians, at least he was a distinguished Intelligence Officer of some sort, which means he might have a clue... maybe... i hope. His civilian awards and education are top notch, so at least he has those going for him as well.

I do really wish that Bush had chosen a retired military leader instead... bah.. oh well. We shall see.

Rummy actually handed W his resignation after Abu Graib. Of course, W wanted "to stay the course!" 'Cause Rummy was doing a fine enough job, supposedly.

I'm just wondering how long it takes for the indictments to come pouring in. (White House is smart in this for once...pushing his imminent court time as far away as possible)

So...should we start a poll on how many sessions it takes before the impeachment(s) start rolling in as well?

If Gates can just remove the Rumsfeld my way or the highway from military thought---that alone would be a total breath of fresh air---when a military officer can't freely express an opinion without fear of being fired----all thought and flexability goes out the window.

A very large and inpassable boulder has been removed from the road to a better future---Rummy going is huge.

I think it's a good move and an interesting one for GW Bush to choose. It could be a sign of real change in the direction Iraq is handled. Gates also serves on the Iraq Study Group, the committee headed by Jim Baker that is investigating new ways to handle Iraq. Even though Robert Gates served with GHW Bush he is still a bit of an outsider from the current Bush administration. He is very closely linked and was a deputy to Brent Scowcroft. Scowcroft, although a Republican, was and has been a very vocal opponent of the war in Iraq. Sadly many intelligence officers from the first GHW Bush's administration were ignored and even ostracized by GW Bush. Perhaps this move is showing a change in policy or at least a willingness to accept some contrasting views.

Actually, it's the addition of a chromosome that I see written all over Bush's face and that of his inbred family (same with Clinton, actually).

Gates is NOT a Neo-Con. His views on Iraq and Iran are totally different from the current administration.

Wiki FTW

And yet another civilian who has no real experience with the military.

Given how well Captain Donald Rumsfeld, USNR(Retired) did handling our military and the command structure. Maybe it will help to have a Sec. Defense with less military experience. But Gates has his own baggage that will need to be examined, Iran Contra redux again.
