You may try to unlock the duron and downclock it to 500Mhz, it may helps the situation since the heat dissipation is lower.

<< If you want a really quiet system without any fans, go for a VIA C3 cpu. You can use heatsink only.

Of course, this cpu isn't very powerful.

All AMD processors need fans on their cpu's..... fans, or watercooling.
>>

Actually you could even run the C3 without a heatsink. (link is a 6.93MB movie)

It's a bit of an afterthought really though as I have only just bought and built the system, I am not wishing to change the CPU straight away...but thanks anyway.

Well I tried it, open case, just had it sat in the BIOS Hardware Monitor. Pulled the plug on the fan. Temp got up to 64C, I plugged fan back in. I am not worried about this temp, what I am worried about is this is not a max load temp. Therefore I can only assume that the temp would just keep rising and rising. I dont think installing a 60mm case fan will help any either.

Looks like I will have to replace the fan. All my standard size 60mm fans are too tall though.

You're running without any case fan? Your cpu cooling is only as good as your case cooling. You can use a real small & cheap cpu hsf if you can cool the case good. Get some 92mm panaflo L1A's or M1A's for intake and exhaust, these fans are quiet but still move a lot of air.

You can also try soft software cooling... CPUCool does a good job with AMD cpu's, it will keep your temp down until you start putting a heavy load on the cpu.

There is no way he can get a 92MM panaflo into that case....it's too small. It has one 60MM exhaust fan in the rear. What you could do is buy an external CD ROM drive and replace the internal drive with one of those HDD intake coolers....that would help a bit.

i see an easy solution. Buy a half decent 60mm fan to put in the back of your case, than using some material, any will do, make a duct from that fan to the HS. You will be able to keep the HS semi cool, while also dampening the noise of the fan.

That's a good idea.... but I don't think there is enough room for a duct...the CDROM is pretty much right on top of the CPU HS/FAN

I would also recommend the c3, the 700 is about $70 I think, not bad considering how cool and quite it can run. If I ever buy that shuttle cube as an MP3/DVD box, I'll probably throw one in to keep it quite for movies.

Thanks for the responses.

I thought about a duct, but to be honest the space in there is not great. I discovered last night that when I had the CD-ROM drive removed the fan was not nearly as loud. When I slid it back in the noise increased substantially. It is obviously being amplified by the bottom of the CD-ROM...Looks like I need to get a very low RPM fan. I don't think fanless is going to happen in this case

the only way to do it would be a morgan cpu, underclocked to like 600mhz. then maybe you could do it.,

search some electronics suppliers... most will allow you to request a sample.. finding one that'll ship internationally shouldnt be too hard.
and if youre in the uk, isnt the noisecontrol silverado avalible there?

The Zalman Flower heatsink is rated to run an Athlon 1ghz fanless. You can do it, you just need a good heatsink.

This isn't a bad idea. I wouldn't try it, though, unless you get some decent case cooling. From the original desription of the case, it doesn't sound like there are any case fans in it.

oops, sorry, i looked at the older posts, I don't think the Zalman would fit because of clearance problems.

I'm sure a Duron 850 has been running a long time ( 1 month probably) with the fan disconnected. Yet it is running, now with the fan connected. It was running in periods of one hour twice a day.

For running DIVX, MP3's, DVD's, the ViaC3 processor is plenty! This is for a living room entertainment PC, kids! Powerhouse not required!
Sell the Duron and get half the money needed for the Via chip to run with just a decent heatsink.

Good case choice, BTW. I've had my eye on that one for almost a year.... someday....

Agreed, a quiet PC is not an AMD PC. If you really want quiet sell the duron and the board and get a decent Via C3 or Celeron with low Clockspeed.

I am willing to bet that a Duron-Morgan at 400MHz or less (3x90fsb is actually possible on many boards!) you could run fanless.
