I don't want the overhead of remote desktop. I just want to be able to login to my home computer via a webpage and launch applications remotely.

Basically I want something like Citrix but I don't have the time or money for that. Anyone know of any open source applications for windows that support this type of functionality?

Yes, sorry for not mentioning that.

Looks like since I am part of the Vista Beta, I might want to check it out. Looks like this is a feature of it.

Application Publishing with client-side file type associations. Microsoft is calling this ?Remote Programs.? Basically you use a wizard on the Terminal Server to create a Remote Programs package for an executable. That package becomes a small (<100k) MSI file that you can then deploy to client machines running Windows XP or newer. (Terminal Server will not include any functionality for deploying these files. That?s up to you to do using Intellimirror, SMS, logon scripts, web portal, etc.) When an MSI is run on the client machine, the proper application shortcuts get installed into the Start Menu and the proper file-type associations are registered. From the user?s perspective, it appears as if the application was installed on their machine, although it?s really a shortcut to a remote seamless application running on a Terminal Server.

It is also including portal pieces.

uu nice
this is only for installing, like I do when I'm installing antivirus clients at work, just awsome how well it works

I know for example media player classic has a webserver for controling the player through a network
but thats the only one I know of, but I would use terminal services / remote desktop, by far the fastest remote desktop program out there

i seem to remember that you can get terminal services over IIS if you're running a server

If you want to launch "services" as opposed to applications, then you could do it via a website. But if you mean you want to launch applications and interact with thier user-interface, then you wont be able to do it from a webpage.

I would re-assess this requirement. Remote Desktop works very well, and is nice and fast (much better than PC Anywhere which i used to use). Remote Desktop doesnt seem to use very much memory or CPU, so what overhead are you refering to?

That's what I was going to say. I've even RD'd within RD to a third machine with no problems (for kicks really).

My reason for not wanting RD is because it is a whole package. If you are familiar with X-Windows or Citrix, I can run the application remotely like it is actually on my machine.

With remote desktop, while I work on local applications, I would have to bring up the whole remote desktop application and go through that computer to do my work.

Basically I want to work with an application that appears like it is running on my computer but is just a application served out by a server. And when I say I want to do it from a webpage, I mean I want to launch it that way preferability just like Citrix. I would like to go to a portal website running on my home computer, login, and launch the apps on my local machine.

Basically I want Citrix but not the cost or server requirements.

That's great if your connection is solid. I like RD over, say, individual X windows, because I can re-establish a session after a connection drop.
