if you're complaining about obstructions, etc., drive yourself to a track at a school or something. Why would you want to run where you have to stop for cars and lights?

I like jumping out of my house and go run. Driving to a track to run 100 laps is not fun.

Umm, if you're on a bike you shouldn't be on the pavement and if you're where you should be (on the road) you should be travelling with the traffic flow.

Should be?

Based on what?

Common sense tells me to go against the traffic and at least have a chance to get out of the way if crazy comes my way.

You don't tell me what I should or should not do, mmmkay?

I use to run a lot, participated in iron man contests etc.

Shin splints can be a real problem and the concrete on sidewalks is much, much harder than the asphalt paving on streets. So, they run on the street to avoid shin splits, or they're just inconsiderate idiots.

Fern

QFT. Most cannot run on concrete esp if going long distances. I could do 1-2 miles no problem, but doing daily runs of 5 miles would have my shins/knees in pain after a few days running on concrete.

Seriously if one has such an issue with a pedestrian using the shoulder of a road, they need to get a life.

That's a huge fail dude.

You bike with traffic. It's common sense, and popular opinion.

Ok, you do that then.

if I have to Run or ride a bike on the street (which I don't do 99.99% of the time) I'm going against the traffic and watching the cars.

Going with the traffic leaves me with "my life in other drivers hands".

No I will NOT do that.

Call it fail, post it on failblog....I don't really care.

TO ME, going WITH the traffic is a HUGE fail.

based on the rules, bikes are considered cars and ride with the slow of traffic

Fuck the rules.

Also, I'm not talking Biking in NYC or something, obviously there you have to do it. And again, I almost never use a road if there is a sidewalk, when I do, I do the same thing as I would do when walking on the road or running.

When they improve the Driver education in this country and test people better.....and our society puts down their smartphones while driving (amongst other things) I might consider the "rules".

Meanwhile, rules can go fuck themselves. I will do what makes most common sense and you can do whatever the rules tell you to do.

Good luck

Dear god dude, you understand so little of life it's scary.

I don't think you are really biking...the idea is getting hit on a bike with you are doing 20-30mph with traffic more than likely only going 30-45mph or less is much better than getting hit head on while you are going 20-30mph and they are as well.

I usually don't post here but I gotta say one thing. If you guys saw how idiotic people drive in south Florida (its the number one in the nation for hit and runs with someone hit on a bike about every week and killed) you may think differently. The rules are there yes, but I will be honest I do not in any way trust people to hold the road 100% of the time and not creep into the bike lane. I ride all the time and I never ever ride with my back to oncoming traffic. That way I can hop over the curb and up into a parking lot if some bone head who doesn't even have a license decides to grab his phone to check a missed call or whatever. Seriously...people simply are too retarded to be trusted in that way to me. I actually got questioned by a cop and I told him flat out, if I can avoid someone who I think may creep over into the bike lane because I can see him 50 yards up the way then I will accept a ticket but keep my life. He didn't have a reply except "its the rules". I got no ticket by the way

Same goes for those asshole bike riders. When I was a kid I always rode on the sidewalk with no issues.

I would hope that you would take this opportunity to reflect upon your shortcomings and take a new path. But that is expecting a lot from someone who rides their bike against traffic.

Yea cause you know, you are perfect and never break the law. Right?

Like speeding, you never speed right? Always obey the law and all?

Like I said, we usually plan out our route with walkways and 99.9999% we do not go on the road, when we do its for 100-200 feet or so.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure you probably speed on daily basis.

And you are asking me to reflect upon the shortcomings and take new paths.

Yep, 100% agreed

I would take the ticket every day of my life over going with the flow of traffic.

FUCK THAT, now way in hell, not the way people drive around here.

And that's why I think people that run/bike with the traffic flow are fucking insane. Especially on these small/curvy backroads that are really tight. At times, even when driving is paying attention there is SO much risk to get hit (blind corners/oncoming car leaving you with no room).

Guess what, if I'm driving and passing a runner/bike and car comes out of the corner head on.......biker/runner is getting hit.......I'm weaving out of the way to avoid head on collision.

I cannot fucking stand bicyclists who go against traffic. I bike regularly and these idiots are frequently safety hazards for me as I go the correct, legally mandated direction on roads. What they are doing is both unsafe and illegal.

Legal doesn't mean right or safest.

Also I'm not talking about riding the bike on the opposite side of the road 24/7. ONLY when there is no side walk.

Cause frankly, bikes/you shouldn't be on the road AT ALL. Regardless where you are (right direction or opposite side) you are taking a risk and are a dangers to others as well.

I simply refuse to bike on the roads, unless I'm forced to. When that happens I take the safest way, against the traffic so AT LEAST I have a chance to get out of some crazy maniacs way if need maybe.

You sir, are NUTS for writing a bike on the streets. And as I driver, I cannot stand you either.

It's insane to be biking on small/curvy backroads no matter which direction you're going.

At least when you're going in the same (correct) direction the car can slow down and follow if passing isn't doable at that moment. Head on you leave them no chance to wait for the proper time.

I am very glad we don't have bikers here who ride in the opposite direction.

It is by far safest to follow traffic anywhere that there are a lot of cyclists because an overwhelming majority will be going with traffic.

Agreed

Riding on a road is a "last resort" when there is no grass area or walkway.

Again I usually avoid such situations all together.

I am glad we don't have bikers here who ride in the opposite direction.

If I'm going to do it, I will do it with the least risks. And going against the traffic (just like walking and running) is by far the safest way.

Here in CT, we take a LOT of backroads/country side roads as we love driving and let me tell you, they are FILLED with cyclist.....they are fuckin nuts!

Oh I guarantee they have a reason.

"Bike paths get dirt in my gears"

"Bike paths are bumpy"

"Bike paths have more glass on them"

"Bike paths aren't as scenic"

"Not as many people can see me on bike paths. That's fewer people who know I'm better than them."

I say clean your bike, live with the bumps, drive around the glass, live with the scenery, and get over yourself. It's what I would do. Am I an asshole for expecting people to do what I would do?

You are, in fact, an asshole, but that has nothing to do with your ignorance about bike riding. It's very obvious you've never ridden a bike in public. Also, what the hell is up with your last point? I couldn't possibly care any less who sees me riding my bike. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

This too. I take the sidewalk even with a bike lane most of the time. Never had a problem with that. There is the odd occasion that I have to hop off to let someone walking have the space but I have never been stopped for riding on sidewalks here. I guess nobody gives it a thought. There is one city out west who has a high population of cyclists on road bikes who often get into confrontations with traffic to promote awareness of cyclists sharing the road. I understand their view but I don't wanna be that guy by any means.
