running @ 166 FSB dangerous to my components?

I've got a shuttle ak31a mobo, whichonly has the 1/4 divider. will running my pci at 42mhz be dangerous to my components? i'm especially worried about my ibm 75gxp drive dying. it's been running so well for almost two years now.. i wouldn't want it to die prematurely!

with your pci bus that far out of spec you do run the risk of damaging pci devices (and its not uncommon for harddrives to have some corrupt data with a high pci bus)

39mhz is the start of the dangerzone for those bus speeds. 42mhz is well into potential problem area.

noooooO!!!! i want to keep my overclock! it's stinks to know that i won't be able to use the full potential of my processor, but eh, i think i can live with 1.5 gigs..

Yes they do. I have the same board as alfhead and was thinking about upgrading to the XP1600 cause of all the overclock gossip lately on this chip. For the hell of it,I raise my FSB to 166 on my current Duron and ran it for a bit but decided I better back off before I regret it.

So from what I gather,you have to have a certain divider in your MB to continue to run your hardware at spec and I guess the AK31a doesn't have it.

So if I want to overclock it,I guess I'll just have to do the multiplier thing and maybe just up the FSB a tad.


Edit: Ever since I ran my FSB at 166,my computer randomly reboots while using at any given time be it 2 hours or even 5 hours after initial boot up.....Is that a sign of corruption or something worth ?
