I am looking for a cheap upgrade of my Katamai 500 and have seen a 633 Celeron II that is said to work at 950.

1) Has anybody else done this?

2) What sort of voltage would be necessary

3) What heatsink/fan combo would be best for a slocket in a BE6 mobo?

4) Anybody seen any results or ideas how it would compare to real PIII at 850Mhz.

Any help/comments gratefully received.

Answers:

1) I have a C2 633@950 running on a BE6-II with a MSI slotket @ 1.75v

2) The default voltage for the 633s is 1.7v. You probably do not want go over 1.9v when overclocking.

3) The best HSF combo would probably be an Alpha PEP66 or one of the newer FOPs. I have a Alpha PEP66 on my setup and the CPU temp never gets over 34 deg. C

4) Unfortunately, from what I have seen, a C2 running at 950 would still get beat by a PIII 850, but I don't know how much. Based on everything I have read said a C2 @ 950 is approximately equal to a P3 @ 750-800.

I got my C2 pretested from Compuwiz at Christmas for $90 shipped. I have seen him offering C2 667@1ghz since then, but I am not sure what he has got now. If I were considering a pretested O/C processor, then Steve is your guy.

Yeah I know that my setup is not as fast as a P3 or Duron running at the same speed, and I can accept that. I have had no overclocking related crashes with this chip from day one, and have been very satisfied with it. You may get lucking and get a 633 that O/C to over a gig or more. Unfortunately, mine maxes out at 950 (100 FSB).

Hope this helps. . .

I've also ran 4 different C2's overclocked and have to agree with the above comments. 533's & 566's are pretty safe to bet they'll do 100+fsb buying untested but 633 and up you'd wanta guarantee or be willing to buy and sell a couple to find what you want. I've used gorbs on my setup but I have a big case and its in a cool spot. Its an advantage to run your ram at cas2 on a bx board but they are equal to a P3 of 20% less mz. They are a quick cost effective upgrade but maybe not much diff for a P500.
