Running a hard drive while on it's side..

I recently bought an IDE perpendicular recording hard drive and an external case, and wanted to know if running the hard drive on it's side is a good or bad idea. A friend of mine has been doing so without any problems, but I figured I'd ask here. Is there an increased chance of failure/data corruption? If so, is it worth worrying about?

I think any angle is fine, as long as you dont move it too much while its running or you could cause the heads to crash into the platters.

It will be just fine as long as you don't plan on shaking it vigorously for no apparent reason, while using it

Think laptops. Same HD technology and they are always on the move and never straight right? Dont worry about it.

I read once that a typical HD can withstand 9g while runninbg.

And several hundred g while off.

Which is why my old laptop's drive didn't die when the case it was in got knocked onto the floor :Q
That thing is over 6 years old now and still works fine (I don't have at anymore).

OP, don't worry about it. There are many systems out there with the HD mounted on it's side. I have one drive mounted in a case on its end and no trouble

As long as it's perpendicular in all orientations, it doesn't matter which way it's "pointing" - just don't do something like line it up at a 45 degree angle one way, a 60 another, and 30 on the third.

I'd love to hear any plausible explanation for this theory.

Before you do that you need to check the akalinity of the water coming out of the spicket in direct contrast to the perpedicular transmuated multi-bilateral sarcophacal azmuth linear analogoustic triad!

other than that you should have no worries!!

AFAIK, desktop drives are designed for use in any of the following six orientations: Flat face down, Flat face up, standing on one end, standing on other end, on left side, on right side. All are perpendicular, 90 degree angles.

Laptop drives are a different design and technology, designed to tolerate any angle of orientation.

If you don't believe him, try this simple test on your hard drive.

Clamp one corner of the drive in vise. Beat on it with a hand sledge until your are able to get the stated angles. Then fire it up and see if it works.
