Running high def from a dvd player?

I was wondering, my dvd player has a high def output and my big screen has a high def input, is it possible to use it and run it in high def from the dvd player? I believe the jacks are the same, it says high def right on there, is this possible?

Yup, 480p is all you'll get out of current DVD's. Blu-Ray and HD DVD are the soonest we'll see the 1080p DVD's.

The only way it could be hi-def is if it is upconverting the signal, other then that, wait for blu-ray and hd-dvd like an earlier poster said.

DVDs are a 480i source material, so most DVD players will output 480i or 480p. Some do upconversion to HD resolutions, but depending on your tv this may or may not make any difference. It also might actually look worse than standard 480i or 480p in some cases.

So if the plugs are green, red, blue...then go for it, at least you will theoretically be getting the best picture.

I have a rca, s-video, coming from the dvd player. s-video I hear sucks, now can i use a regular red/white/yellow rca cable or do I have to get a special gree/blue/red rca cable?

EDIT: I need the best picture becuase the tv is about 6 feet from any viewing area since it is in my room and it has a plastic screen protector sheet on it also which i won't take off cuz of my cats.

s-video is better than the yellow RCA connection you're using.

Anyway, going from s-video to component is probably not going to make a big difference.

75ohm RCA cables are what you want to use for a component connection. Your yellow RCA video cable probably is, but the white and red probably aren't.

Those are pretty cheap. I wonder what size to buy, 6' should be plenty but I wonder how popular the 12' size is?

Right now I am using the white/red/yellow cables that came with the dvd player. Is s-video better than the regular rca cables? And I would need to buy the red/blue/green component cables if I wanted to try the high def?

I'm a big fan of using the best available interconnect, if you have component you might as well use it. Don't go drop $60 for cables but if you can pick up a set for $10 you might as well.

It won't be high definition, but IMO it's worth $10 knowing you're getting the most out of your equipment (that cost a lot more than $10).

Uhh... s-video is better than yellow/white/red

Component cables are cheap enough that you should probably buy real ones rather than using the RCA cables you already have. If you have three yellow ones, that should work though.

Your current yellow/white/red ones should work just fine too actually, but it might not the official spec for the cables.

Upconverting doesn't really do anything.

Chances are, if you have a HDTV tv, it is already doing conversion from whatever source to display at its native resolution, which can be 1080i or 720p, or some 1080p. But the upconversion is not gonna turn some thing lower fidelity to higher fidelity again.

Think of it as this analogy. When you convert a wav file to mp3 and convert it back to wav, the final wav file will be as good of a quality as the mp3. Upconverison does not magically fill in all the missing information in the source materal, it merely pads it so it looks "smoother". When a movie is encoded at mpeg2 on the dvd at 480p, this is as good as you can get, unless you buy the HD dvd version of the movie that studios will release in the future.

well, i picked up a set of component cables at walmart, 17 bucks for 6 feet which compaired to that site is waay overpriced, but they seem to be made well. I'll see if they do anything. if not, back to walmart I go

Well for one, I have heard that the actual screen needs more care when you clean it, I'm wiping the front everyweek because of the static charge, and I don't know if you have seen what a cat does when something interesting lands on the screen and the cat get's the idea of being a great mighty hunter and launches it's self at the screen, could be anything too, a fly, dust bunny, or a figmint of the cat's immagination, either way I feel much safer with the screen on because of cleaning and scratches or something.

The yellow video cables are composite cables. And RCA is a type of connector, not a cable.

All 1080i does for GT4 is sharpens the jaggies so you can see them better.
