Running hot on an e8400

I just built a computer that uses an e8400 w/ an asus P5Q. I've been hearing about how easy it is to OC this rig. This was going to be my first time OC'ing w/ it, but I've run into quite an issue. On the stock settings I'm running at 77C the factory heat sink. I know most people will say to buy a better heat sink, but I shouldn't have to worry about my PC getting too hot on all auto settings! I've used Speed fan and Core temp to get the temp of my cores. I used a thermal compound on my processor. Is there something typical that I could have done wrong? any help would be appreciated.

they all run hot anymore
seems that's the price the consumers pay for the cpu race
i really think they should stop adding cores, and increasing speed, untill they get this under controll, but that's just my thought

maybe try undervolting it as low as you can while keeping it stable

Alright. From what I've read everywhere else it said my idle temp should be under 50, not 70. And my load temp is right around 103. I'm looking at buying about a $30-$40 heat sink to try and fix my temp problems. Just seemed strange that it ran so hot off a stock heat sink when everyone says these are easily over clockable to 3.6 on a stock fan.

I tried leaving the voltage at 1 and it did help a little, but puts my idle down to about 63 which is more ideal and my load to 97. Any other ideas or is that pretty much my only option? Could my case be part of the trouble as well? I have a lot of room in there, but I don't have an enclosure that goes right on top of the heat sink.

I'm looking at getting this heat sink.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Have you tried reseating the heatsink? Those push pins can be a real PITA. What case are you using?

You most likely don't have your heatsink completely seated. Your temps are way too high.

To me, it seems you don't have the heatsink mounted properly. Make sure the push-pins are all the way through. There is no way your processor should be running that hot, not even with a stock heatsink/fan.

At stock speeds/VCore with the stock heatsink/fan I'm running full load each core ~58-60C. Ambient temp is around 80F (27C). This is using CoreTemp.

I just tried real temp and its giving me readings about 10 degrees lower than core temp. I tried reseating it again last night and it helped out with my temperatures a bit, but they're still definitely high. It sounds like thats my problem.

My current idle temp after reseating my proc is 55 C on core temp and 45 C on Real Temp. I don't know which one of these I should believe more.

I did go ahead and purchase this heat sink.

Any advice on getting these heat sinks on there securely? This is my first Intel proc(always been an AMD guy) before.

As for my case, it is just a crappy old case that I have, but the airflow isn't a problem becuase as soon as I start it up I'm already at 65 on Core Temp(55 on real temp) immediately and then it settles down to 55 on core temp(45 on Real temp). I've had the window off since its a brand new rig for me and I've been trying to figure out my temp problems.

I appreciate the help guys. Hopefully I'll get the temp down on this soon and then I can start OC'ing it.

I acutally just installed that Xigmatek last night, for an E8400. I found it easiest to take the mobo out of the case to do it so I could ensure that it was seated fully.

Best way I've found to get the push pin style to mount correctly is to make sure the black locking piece with the arrow is in the locked position...simply press down until you hear it click.

Make sure you mount it to the mobo before you put the fan on the heatsink or you won't be able to get to the two push pins on the fan side.

stock cooling sucks, what you bought isnt going to be much better. pushpin mounting is lame, shoulda got something with a real bolt-thru kit.

When you say you used thermal paste, you didnt apply it on top of the stuff that already comes on Intel stock heatsinks, right?

You should be getting WAY lower than that. With a cheap arctic cooler 7 I was getting 30C idle @ 3.8ghz. And thats with Socal ambients, not Alaska.

Holiday86,
This may help you:

What you got is fine, this would be a good idea to use with it and do it all in one shot.

btw: "elite" status means what on this forum?
I hope the reply given above isn't an example.

Hey Shimm !
thanks for throwing this link up !!
Just finished building my new E8600 & wanted to check out temps before doing anything else !!
I got ver. 2.70 & i'm assuming this is the more accurate of the temp monitors..
Right now she is running 25*c stock with ZeroTherm Zen 120 cooler !!
Thanks again !! Ol'Pal

The tjunct that coretemp and other programs use for the wolfdale is approximately 10C's too high.
