Ok. so I was about to register a domain name, when i realized that unless i got hosting from the company i was registering it with (as opposed to hosting the site myself), i would need a DNS server for it. How does one go about setting up a dns server, can it be done from a dynamic IP, and how difficult is it?

Thanks,

Which provider did you register your domain w/?
Whoever it is should provide DNS for you...just tell them to point the domain name to your IP address.

I havent registered it yet. I was looking at GoDaddy. My only concern is that I have a Dynamic IP. Do you think they will point it to another Domain Name, i could use DynDNS.com to map my DynamicIP to something like new.dyndns.com. Then map my new DOmain to that.

IDK, i guess i could bug RoadRunner about a static IP. Thanks for the info,

You can also look into registering with a dynamic dns service, DNS2Go (deerfield.com) is one I have used in the past. If you want to host your own DNS servers it can be quite a task. I have a business account with my broadband provider with 2 public IP's and host my own DNS, Web, Mail, etc. But for something on a smaller less critical scale, a dynamic service would be a good idea. just my $0.02

This is technically possible, though you'll most likely have to pay extra for that kind of feature.

Here's what I do:

Register Domain on Godaddy.com.

Goto http://sitelutions.com and register with them. Add your newly registered Domain name from godaddy to your sitelutions account and download their dynamic dns update software. Also write down the names of their DNS name servers.

Go back to godaddy and add the sitelution name servers to your newly registered Domain name.

It's easy and free (Well, other than the Godaddy registration.)

Register the name with GoDaddy, and make an account with IPUpdater. Have GoDaddy forward to the Ipudater account, which in turn will forward the request to your computer. When your IP number at home changes, then the little program from Ipudater will update the new IP and your web guests will never notice the diffrence. I have been using Ipupdater for 2 years and have never had a single problem. I also use use them to forward email to my exchange server. I have a dymanic address at home that changes often.

Create a Dyndns entry that points to your personal server; have your server periodically update its IP with Dyndns (use some software that does this).
Use MyDomain.com to register the domain.
Use MyDomain's "URL Forwarding" feature to forward your domain name to your dyndns address.

Take a look at ZoneEdit - they're a free service that you can use for DNS servers if you have a dynamic IP address. They'll let you use your own domain name with their DNS servers for free.
