My strategy for the last 15-20 years of owning laptops has always been to avoid AV Software and Windows Updates completely. It's easier to just pretend like they don't exist. If it ain't broke don't fix it, and if it is broke then figure out the issues as they arise. Simple strategy and it works. In my experience AV Software and Windows Updates have always caused more headaches and problems than good, not having them in my life is one less negative thing to worry about. More likely a hardware problem will be what breaks your computer first, are you going to install anti-hardware deteriorating? How about anti-theft measures if someone breaks into your house? Viruses were created by people! Embrace the opportunity to see a virus actually enter a computer and learn more about it, it's one of those rare occurrences like seeing a UFO flying through a triple rainbow. YOLO :awe:

I think M$ updates cause more problems than they are worth, but you need an anti-virus or at least use Noscript in Firefox.

And before someone jumps on my ass about M$ updates I read that there was an update right before April 15 (tax time) and it caused a tax program to stop working. So research before updating goes a long way.

...People need to start researching anti-virus detection capabilities!

People need to start downloading crap, like illegal software downloads.

For people like yourself, I stand by my original statement (get the best protection you can buy, the free stuff probably won't cut it). The rest of us will be fine with MSE and safe browsing habits.

But free screensavers are soooo tempting!

[redacted]. I am using Kaspersky for years and honestly couldn't live without it.

And: You never "know" what to click and whatnot...this is why I love Kaspersky because it actually also warns me when a site wants to download something malicious. How would you know what is on the next URL you are about to click? You don't. And...KAV is *not* that resource hogging as some claim...I actually read a few comparisons recently and KAV did pretty well in terms of memory usage etc.

Your question should rather be: WHY NOT install a good AV program...?

That would be tantamount to piracy, so I can't let you post that here

Quite a few people seem to be missing the difference between sufficiency and necessity. For many of us, MSE is sufficient. Getting a different AV is not necessary.

For those harping on MSE, do you have a smart phone? Does it happen to run Android? If so, have you installed your security software for your phone? Why would you be so critical of your PC and not your phone?

Kaspersky I use as if you use ebay - you can get a 5 license version for £14.95!

I am no lover of the freebies, not so much for me (as I am not stupid), but for other family members, that have not the scruples to stop installing dodgy toolbars etc - but no av solution stops that!

I use chrubuntu on my chrome book, with no av as it is not necessary!

On my android phone I use avast free and it is fine!

I suspect we can all argue on our preference, but it is what is best for each person that matters.

I would not run a windows pc without av though - just my pennysworth

Don't install crap on your phone, and you shouldn't get malware. A/V for phones is scareware, and only helps protect against user stupidity.
