Running my PC without an antivirus?

Don't install crap on your phone, and you shouldn't get malware. A/V for phones is scareware, and only helps protect against user stupidity.

Which is precisely my point about PC based antivirus. There's little need for anything more than MSE aside from protecting against user stupidity.

User stupidity is one facet to getting a virus, but there are scripts that can be executed without your knowledge that can give you a virus and then you have the Java BS exploits.

I agree which is why i will never pay for anti virus software in the future. I will stick with microsoft security essencials with windows 7 and use ubuntu instead.

Somehow it just magically works for millions of people (including myself) I suppose?
It has ACTIVELY detected and stopped exploits for me, but not many since I don't browse the shadynet.

just because 1 million people use MSE and *think* they are happy with it doesn't mean they are safe. for all you know they may all be infected and not even know it.

Prior to the release of MSE ran net naked for years. No problems. I would occasionally download avast, AVG, or some other freebie and do some scans. Nothing. Hated leaving them installed because they seemed to be more trouble than they were worth.

Gave MSE a shot in 2010 and like it because it's thin and unobtrusive. Fast forward three years and the landscape has changed again. MSE no longer seems to be wise. Based upon the new knowledge I've gained from this post and some comparative validation from other sites I think I will give Kasperski a trial run. If its as good as the ratings suggest I might go ahead and pay up.

That's what I have been saying in this thread! Use Noscript if you don't want to use an anti-virus.
