I think the founding fathers did a terrible job when it came to the mechanics and implementation of how the people choose their leaders.

The federal government can set up minimal standards and leave it up to the state as how to implement. If a state doesn't meet the requirements they are in violation of the peoples constitutional right to vote.

well it kinda made sense when you needed people to travel by horseback for a week to tell you what the vote was.

The problem with the voter id thing is that a lot of people dont have any documents anymore. So they would need to spend money on those and so forth.
