When I was in High School (many years ago) I was a runner. Since then I've put on quite a bit of weight and unfortunately have stopped running long ago. I'd like to take it up again, so I'm looking for suggestions on what people recommend for the larger man, some that are particularly easy on the ole knees.

6'3", 250lbs.

Get something around 50 dollars with a lot of support, I got the Air Coupe 2. Then get a good sole with a lot of support, which runs around 20 dollars. This is much better than buying an expensive shoe with stock soles. So for about $75, you'll be good to go.

Heavier runners tend to need more support, and unfortunately, those shoes usually cost more. You can't really take any recommendations based on what shoes other people like since it's based entirely per person. You should go to a specialty running store like Fleet Feet, and have them help you. They're usually very knowledgeable. You should also expect to pay around $100 for a high quality pair of shoes. It's better to spend the money and get a decent pair then skimp and end up injured (as I have done).

This is your best advice. I tried for years to find the right shoes I'm 6ft, 200#. I finally went to a running store and got someone who knows running shoes to fit me with the right ones. It was totally worth the time and effort.

If you're lazy, roadrunnersports.com has a wizard you can use and they will recommend shoes for you.

Depending on your foot type, the "Beast" offered by Brooks is a great shoe for bigger runners. But it's a motion control shoe. If you are flat footed it'd be fine. If you are high arched...it's not a good choice.

As Scorch said, best to got to a running specialty shop and get fitted.

I've been using New Balance for a few years now and love them. Also, they have knowledgable staff that can help you pick the right shoe for you.

Serious post:

get fitted once, I went to a doctor, but I was injured at the time from another event (achilles tendon tearing due to growth spurts)....

Find out what kind of shoe you need (pronator, flat foot, high arch, etc)....

then find the shoe.

Excellent advice. I am a larger runner, and have found Brroks to be good.
