I just bought a ThunderBird 900mhz and was wondering at what cpu temp is considered normal while in normal use and what is considered hazardous.

The Fan you use is very important too.
I'd say a standard fan should cool it at under 50 degrees or so, taking into account you havent overclocked it.

I have an ASUS A7V133 motherboard with Antec's cyclone fan running at 10700RPM. The 900mhz is not over clocked and is running at 66C. Is that a little too hot? I know my friends' AMD 900mhz non-overclocked rus about 67C.

It is a little hot, and that fan isn't the greatest fan,b ut more importantly,

how is your case cooling?

My MSI K7PRO took a dump Sunday, so while I forced to do repairs, I took the opportunity to upgrade this box (System Rig info below is now out of date for a while ). I got an Asus A7V133, an Athlon T-Bird 1000 - 266 FSB, and 256 MB of PC133 Ram.

With a Taisol CEK734092 HSF that the computer shop sold me along with the CPU and the phase change material on the the HSF, Asus PC Probe is reporting 55C/131F for the cpu (sometimes at 54C/128F), and that's running in a box with a new Enermax 430 Watt PS, a 2CoolPC Turbo and a Sunon Quiet 120MM Fan mounted with the hardware from a GLobal Win CAF12 blowing on the cpu. Even with an open case, it was never below 125, and the heatsink at that time only felt warm. In addition to the Enermax's fans, there are two 80mm PC Power & Cooling Silencer case fans exhausting air from the case.

At the same time Asus PC Probe is reporting 55/131, Motherboard Monitor 4 and 5 both show 43C/109F.

SiSoft Sandra says the CPU temps are more like 107F. I'm not sure which is accurate. Even after an hour of installing software (MS Office Premium 200, Paint Shop Pro 7, Adobe Photoshop 6, and Fixit Utilities 2000) the temp hasn't bidged.

Asus PC Probe isn't reporting the Enermax's PS Fan, even though it's plugged into the right header on the motherboard, and is running.

I'm not sure what temp my CPU is really at.

Well, I have a pci blow in fan and little case fan. I guess i need to get more fans for my case. I have a full tower, thinking that if there is more space then, my system will be ok. Guess I think wrong. What should i get to cool my system down?

LongAce:

Technically, 66C is within the safety zone, but it's pretty hot just the same.

I have essentially the same rig, running at 933 right now (7.0x133) but I have had it running at 1.0gHz (7.5x133) and as high as 1050 (7.5x140) before I got a BSOD.

I run an Alpha PAL6035 with a Sunon 26.5cfm fan.

My idle temps right now are between 38C and 41C depending on the room temp. Even running at 1050 yesterday, with a case temp of 77F, ASUS Probe was only reporting around 45C. Loaded temps are around 45-46C. Room temp is between 70 and 75F.

66C seems awfully hot for a non-OC'd 900. Even with a generic HSF from mwave.com, I peaked out at around 51C after an hour or two of flight simming.

I'd take a good look at the HSF, make sure it's installed right, and has a good thermal compound in there. Then make sure your case is well ventilated. I'd have at least one 80mm fan drawing cool air in at the front, and a matching one exhausting the hot air at the back, in addition to the power supply's own fan.

Good luck!

Thanks to all for helping. I have to get some better fans and heat sink. Again, thanks.
