Running Win7 Enterprise

For anti-virus, I'm going to try Avira. Well, I already tried, but it won't install. I finishes up the "preparing for install" process and just dies. No logs, no error reports. Tried turning of UAC and running in various compatability modes.

What about malware? What is the best freebie? Spybot?

Best free protection? Use a Standard User account and Software Restriction Policy (or AppLocker). Free (or at least paid-for ). No updates required EVER. No noticable performance hit. Arbitrary protection from a wide array of threats and attack vectors including infected USB drives, CDs, DVDs, cameras, MP3 players, etc, not just web/IM/email.

Also, leave UAC enabled at the default level for your Standard User account (maxed-out) and fully enable your Data Execution Prevention setting to cover all software, not just core system stuff.

Once Microsoft's free anti-malware gets out of beta testing, that would be a good freebie for Win7. Hang in there

Avira Antivir bar none is the best. Uses so little resources and catches just about everything. I've switched away from NOD32, though it uses less resources, since it let a bunch of things slip by. Luckily i do full images every week. Norton is still quite bloated, AVG and Avast had screwed up system in the past, so they still leave me feeling dirty in the mouth. Send me a PM if you want the no banner version of Avira.
