About the internet/phone access here in Iraq.
On my base... you get 30 minutes... period... and now that there is a much larger group of bodies... the lines are proportionally longer. I've put my name down, left the tent, returned two hours later... and finally had my name called to get my "share of the resources." So although that hasn't been the norm... it has definitely happened. Before our replacements started showing up... the wait would generally be between... 20-50 minutes. Now if you wanted to set the alarm clock for 3-4:30am... and come in then... chances are there wouldn?t' be a line.
Now... I don?t want to make anyone think our job over here isn't less glorious than they believe... BUT... let's say you (the soldier) are working a 12hr shift. (Which is unlikely)... That means you have 4hrs (8 to sleep) for R&R... now minus 20 minutes for your Navy shower and other hygiene (because we're only supposed to take 5-10min showers although that's rarely the case... water on, water off, lather, water on, rinse, water off, get out) that leaves you with 3hrs and 40 minutes to do whatever it is you please. Most of my friends (mix of several jobs, infantry, medics, eod, commo, etc.) spent about an hour to an hour and a half on the internet/phones every single day... Yes we write emails, yes we talk to wives, yes we buy needless crap and cool bolt-ones for the hotrod or whatever... but several of us (especially the commo guys) spent a lot of time surfing the web in search of entertainment, reading political blogs, posting on forums, etc.
Okay what are you getting at dude?
What I'm trying to say here is... every version of entertainment has its value... and the stress relief said entertainment provides is PRICELESS to us. That said, every source of entertainment is also SOLICITED... if the GI doesn't like Rush, he wont go to his site, he also wont ask for a subscription, he'll be browsing the billions of acres of cyber porn, or talking to his wife, or WHATEVER.
The only charities that are "wasted," IF you could even call it that... are the unsolicited ones. Yes there is a shortage of toilet paper lol... but is it impossible to get? No... Are there soldiers running around with dirty booties? No... lol we all wipe... and yes baby wipes are the shiznit. What I mean is the boxes full of junk food, candy, and reading material that wasn't solicited.
Soldiers like Rush, soldiers like bush (for the most part... check the voting), soldiers like people who donate ANYTHING, soldiers like the "America is the sh!t and if you're a terrorist we're going to kick your A$$" mentality... jump on the bandwagon or sit down and shut the hell up. Even propaganda is more useful to a soldier than negativity.
Anyways... I?ll post more as it comes to me... for now I?m going to go back to talking to my wife... I'm paying 5 dollars an hour (thanks to AT&T CyberZone... ) to talk to her and loving every dollar spent. It is 6:30am I've been up all night and I?m going to attempt to see her through the New Year. Sleep is underrated anyway.
If you want some more insight... check out my blogsite and the sites of my other military buddies @

by the way... i'm in kuwait now... that's why i have cyberzone... in iraq... most internet cafe's are brought to us by a company called SPAWAR ... they suck... they come in... set up shop... and leave. When something breaks... we call them they send someone a few days later and fix it. Luckilyfor me and mine... we bought our own civilian satellite internet setup... paid nearly 900/month for it and split the cost between the company (came to about 25/each... not bad). We had internet allllll dayyyyy long... even at work. But... i'm in communications... so that's a fringe benefit... 90% of the soldiers dont have that luxury (unless you're a captain or above of course). Later
