Russia is claiming the convoy was not their military. Claims to be letting Ukraine inspect it, and will deliver future "aid" via the Red Cross. Not the turn of events I was expecting.
There is a chance that this faux aid convoy (hastily painted masses of now white trucks carrying questionable aid materials in mostly empty holds, while driven by probably non-uniformed military personal) was not for international play, but as Russian domestic junk-food.
...a possible way out for Putin as no sane strategic mind could think such a large swath of eastern Ukraine could offer long term Russian held stability and the avoidance of greater consternation by Russians and their economy....
....then again, a gamble may be made with an open last minute play -- either foolishly militarily invading a bit to the west or retain the border status-quo, still basking the glow of a Russian Crimea, and now a happy Russian audience seeing their great leader offer/provide wide-angled lens assistance to their
fascist subjugated brethren and the west responding to loosen the currently rather wimpy economic vice. The latter provides greater nationalism for a win, but on the expectation of pragmatic sanity.
