Probably the most comprehensive story about how close (or not close really) a peace deal was in 2022. Main issues that prevented were severe limits proposed for Ukrainian military power, a mandatory pull back from the borders of occupied territories, and Ukraine's ability to enter into defense pacts that would have other countries come to their aid directly in the event of further Russian aggression in violation of the deal.

Ukraine is unlikely to ever agree to any deal that precludes the basing of European military forces on its territory to enforce the terms.

This doesn’t surprise me. Just before the invasion Ukraine pretty publicly said similar things. Putin really wanted a war though and didn’t really care about his original demands so Russia invaded anyway.

He sees himself as the next Peter the Great in Russian history and he needs military victories to cement that legacy.

Russians really worried about Ukrainian FPV drones increasingly intercepting their big ISR drones, effectively blinding their forces. There have been a number of videos showing this lately.

And this is another war example the US should take careful note of, as the US is far more reliant on big and expensive ISR drones than is Russia... and U.S. keeps making them bigger (and more expensive).

We know our big drones are vulnerable to surface to air missiles. The Houthi's have taken out a few and Hezbollah have downed some Israeli ones. I think as long as the loss rate isn't out of hand we don't mind much. In any hypothetical contest with the Russians we are going to prioritize eliminating their SAM assets. Turning on their radars to take out a Global Hawk likely to earn them an AARGM-ER in the face from an F-35 that was lying in wait.

Have they really 'advanced' in any meaningful way?

They seem to have moved their navy from the Black Sea to the Caribbean.
No. We basically have a stalemate. The delay in funds from the US congress prevented the UA from planning a summer offensive (or so it seems). It is very difficult for the UA to properly defend such a large front against an enemy with a numerical advantage. Breaking out and taking back an oblast, for instance, will be very, very difficult. The permissions to use extended range munitions is a BIG step in cutting off RU's ability to move men and material into Ukraine.

Russian special forces kill Islamic State-linked hostage-takers

"Russian special forces have freed two guards and killed several men linked to Islamic State who had taken them hostage at a detention centre in the southern city of Rostov, the prison service said.

Automatic gunfire could be heard in footage published on Russian Telegram channels.

“The criminals were eliminated,” Russia’s federal penitentiary service said in a statement on Sunday, adding that a “special operation” had taken place to free the hostages"."

^^^ The Rooskies have/are going to have their hands full on more than one front, especially from the eastern stans.

given they know the weak point is on the top of the chassis just before the turret , are the cope cages even doing anything anymore ?
From my limited understanding those cages are not effective against top attack weapons like the Javelin but are at least somewhat effective against drones.

Yes, these made their debut in 2022 as an attempt to defeat top attack ATGMs. They decidedly did not work for that purpose.

^^^ But can't a reasonable pilot fly the drone under it from either front or behind? Or don't they have real time cameras?

Yeah often the engine deck is left exposed or they hit a track to disable it then com back later and drop or fly into the open hatches. I guess you could consider them somewhat effective if the tank is disabled but the crew can run for it instead of the whole thing exploding immediately because the ammo in the autoloader gets set off.
