rather long thread about casulties

One last thing; Casualties in war are gory. Deaths affect soldiers & units in ways most can't imagine. Combat deaths are ugly. Those killed are mostly 18-24 yr olds who had an entire life in front of them. Their bodies are savaged or burned beyond recognition.

That's why most soldiers who have seen war never want to see it again. And why some professional soldiers do all they can to prevent wars in the future, with an understanding of what is at stake. And why Putin's illegal & criminal war in Ukraine is such an abomination.

I'd argue Ukrainian interest in making greater compromises probably erodes with intentional infliction of mass casualties on its civil population.

Like most Russian strategies when things go awry its self defeating.

Yeah - at least from the outside, it seems that shelling civilians is only going to harden Ukrainians resolve and contempt for anything Russia has to offer. Not to mention the rest of the world as well. At this point, this is a no-win situation for either side, but one side is clearly exasperating the situation (that they started)

That holocaust survivor was probably an Azov fighter!!! /s
I can't believe there are people (in this thread!!!) buying into that shit.

While you MAY have some valid point here I have no idea what it was based on your post.

Explain please .... who do you actually think was "lying" here and more importantly why?

Are you implying that this is some kind of "stunt" to ramp up pressure for military assistance from Israel or something? (all I've got)

Story seems fairly credible actually:

96-year-old Holocaust survivor said killed in Russian shelling of his Kharkiv home

Not sure if this has been covered. U.S. plans on sending a bunch of old Soviet AA.
I'd seen it speculated about previously, but assumed it wouldn't happen. The US has been pretty secretive about which systems it even has (for training against), and I assumed the US probably didn't have much in the way of live ammo for them.

From personal experience, yeah, I agree.

A number of friendly countries possess missile reloads for various older ex-soviet systems who are probably already supplying them to Ukraine.

#Russia provokes #NATO Today Russian fighter-bomber entered #Polish airspace. This happened immediately after the announcement by the Polish leadership about the possible deployment of Polish peacekeepers to #Ukraine to ensure the safety of civilians.

This is either an accident or provocation. I bet accident.

Poland is calling up reserves for 2 weeks training and have made mandatory military training for some medical professionals. Also training regional volenter groups.
I am seeing this in my family.

Edit: and just as a side note, Russians have had officer losses roughly approaching the equivalent of the entire senior command structure over 4 divisions (albeit the losses actually spread over 10+ divisions). Hard to believe that happens without something approaching proportionate casualties - i.e. approaching 40k.

I would say it shows relatively good intel and targeting, killing commanders and planners is always best if you can find them.

Worst case? Scramble for loose nukes TBH.
Best case? Meh, doesn't really exist.

Most likely case? Putin-lite takes over and tries to retake control of whatever he can.

Yeah, some other prominent FSB type re-consolidates power, probably by saying we won't engage in a wasteful expedition like this again.

On the Twitter replies, it has a claimed Ukrainian intercept of a recent March 18 Russian summary - claiming as of March 18 a total of 12,814 Russian soldier deaths, plus an additional 4,451 private military contractor deaths.

In any case, it is a lot of needless deaths. Not that Putin cares as long as he has more cannon fodder to throw into the grinder.

Hard to see how they get much done now if they really are coming up on 25% casualties.
