Yep, the government has no business helping the parties select their candidates. It’s an enormous subsidy to the dominant parties.The system stifles variety. What is weird, to me at least, is how the Government is so involved in the Party selection process. The Dems and Reps are extensions of the Government and not of the Members, more Institution than something organic to the Citizenry.

I've said before I suspect the Democrats would split into progressives and centrists. Sure a bunch of GOP politicians would join the new centrist party, but initially they'd have to temper themselves a whole lot. The worst crazies would not be welcome.
