I would have thought this would be a strange time for peace talks from the Ukrainian point of view.

On the day of discovery of many executed civilians and even naked females partly burned on the side of a road.

On the day that Ukraine have been given assurances of heavy weapons flowing in from former Soviet countries.

When Starstreak and Switchblades are finally in (or close to being in) the country.

When Russia's Eastern Ukraine campaign is now being hampered by a lack of materials thanks to daring Ukrainian raids inside Russia, which means Russia now have to do air defence in depth along their entire border with Ukraine (which they can't).

Fark no. Ukraine is just getting started...

So far news in US seems to be refusing to cover these atrocities- perhaps waiting for independent verification, but lots of supporting proof already including independent press observing the collection of civilian corpses.

On the other hand, several news sources still quoting Russian propaganda calling this a withdrawal to defuse tensions (without attribution or disclaimer).

I’m seeing coverage from AP, Reuters, and WSJ so far. US tv won’t be far behind.

And on the streets of Moscow, business as usual - negligible impact of sanctions, and no recognition that a war is even going on, but concern Poland might “start” a war. Belief companies are just paying lip service to sanctions and will be back to normal in a few months (with real supporting examples). Ruble basically back at pre-war level. And no concern but almost enthusiasm of potential to use nukes to achieve political goals (after years of propaganda normalizing this).

Fuck Belarus. With a hammer.
Also, I read elsewhere that 70-80% of the population now supports the war and the once disagreeing oligarks have returned to the fold.... I dont want to let go of that piece of my heart that says thou shall not hate... But ruskies is *reeeeaaaaally* pushing my buttons.

Yeah, as an expert in weapon systems (by which I mean "having just earlier today spent two minutes scan-reading wikipedia") I'm not sure flares would have helped, given the guidance system that Starstreak uses (it involves lasers...though in some complex fashion that doesn't require continual target 'painting').

However, you'd think if the helicopter crew _had_ flares, they'd be firing them off anyway (as they probably didn't have time to check wikipedia) so the point still stands, no?
I'm wondering if there are so many manpods and small AA missile systems around that these shoot downs are happening in route where the pilots aren't expecting to be engaged.

Their position in the east is pretty dire despite Russian difficulties. It’s one thing to mount a successful flexible defence, switching to the offence is really difficult.

They did use flares. The video that is posted is a shortened version showing the moment the one helicopter got hit . There is a longer version where you see one of them fire off flares as soon it does that weird thing where they pull up to fire off their rockets.

edit: replied to the wrong person.

MSN is reporting it, but it is being downplayed a bit or kept off the headline:

Bucha’s mayor, Anatoly Fedoruk, said in an interview that around 270 local residents had been buried in two mass graves. He estimated that 40 people were lying dead in the streets. Some had been bound and executed — shot in the back of the head, he said.

Almost 300 people were buried in a mass grave in Bucha, a commuter town northwest of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, its mayor said Saturday, after the Ukrainian army retook control of the key town from Russia only to find corpses strewn throughout the community.

Bucha's still-unburied dead wore no uniforms. They were civilians with bikes, their stiff hands still gripping bags of shopping. Some had clearly been dead for many days, if not weeks.

Ukrainians Count Dead, Dig Mass Graves, Clear Land Mines After Russian Pullback

“In Bucha, we have already buried 280 people in mass graves,” Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk told the AFP news agency by phone on Saturday. He said the heavily destroyed town’s streets are littered with corpses.
He said the victims were men and women, and that he had seen a 14-year-old boy among the dead.

Bit easier to read map with good overview of current positions in Ukraine vs. last week, one of the more accurate ones based on what I’ve seen across multiple sources.
Edit: Minor supply line notes: Russia has secure rail lines direct from Russia both into Crimea and into LNR/DNR, and from Crimea Russia rail now extended to at least Melitopol and possibly further East. Where the North had long supply lines, South is far easier for Russia to keep supplied (and reinforced)

When Hitler tried this tactic against Russia it really worked out well.

The Russians can strike fuel storage terminals too, and they just did unfortunately in Odessa
Russia has striking fuel terminals for weeks now.

Russia's systematic destruction of Ukrainian hospitals is a much larger problem:
For a month now, Russian forces have repeatedly attacked Ukrainian medical facilities, striking at hospitals, ambulances, medics, patients and even newborns — with at least 34 assaults independently documented by The Associated Press.

I wonder why they haven't struck Odessa's fuel stores before today, maybe they were still delusional enough to think they could take the town and make use of them.

Odessa’s mayor was one expected to fully side with the Russians - if they could have gotten troops there quickly. But rampant Russian war crimes and atrocities have now made that politically not viable.

Executing parents in front of their children, then raping young girls?

Wipe these animals out Ukraine. No quarter. Unless Russian troops are taking advantage of your offers of clemency (and have been vetted), put them down like diseased dogs, with extreme prejudice.
