The Daily Mail is sensationalizing things, as it often does — "weapons of destruction" doesn't necessarily mean nukes. Putin knows that if he uses even one nuclear weapon, it's game over. NATO countries (if not more) declare war against Russia, and Putin's regime ends. As it stands, you don't signal plans to mobilize 300,000 reservists if you think nukes will work.

Ironically, I'd call the mobilization a win for Ukraine and its allies. It's Putin's admission that the invasion of Ukraine is failing, and it forces more Russians to acknowledge the realities of the war and its consequences. It's easy for a Russian to cheer on the war (or plug their ears) when nothing has substantially changed in their life... it's another when a friend gets called up, especially when there's a real chance that friend won't come back. I don't think the move will lead to a revolution, but it could easily hurt Putin more than it helps.

Appears the biggest impact from Putin's announcement is likely the mandatory (and indefinite) extension of the contract period for current soldiers, which otherwise should have been rotating out in large numbers as their contract terms expire.

Of course, that's not going to help his popularity with the troops any.

(Edit: bringing back 40 year old reservists that last saw training 20+ years ago, isn't going to help anytime soon other than as more cannon fodder)

Navalny said it best: this is going to lead to a "massive amount of deaths," and it's reasonable to suggest he was thinking at least as much about Russian casualties as he was Ukranians. It's horrifying to imagine a 30- or 40-something being pulled away from their family, rushed through a few weeks of refresher training and being forced to fight against troops with far better experience and equipment.

IRT the call up for 300k troops by Putin: Remember that old adage about the Unqualified leading the Unwilling to do the Unnecessary? Well that's going to be put to the test writ large with this gigantic FUBAR clusterfuck that Putin just added to his list of other gigantic clusterfucks that he created with that overly gigantic ego of his.

If this is not an all-in call by Putin then he is surely making an apparent tell of his intentions. After his 300k troops gets butchered in Ukraine and the horror stories of war get taken back to all points in Russia by those many unwilling troops that are now blaming daddy Putie for their nightmares, missing body parts and PTSD, this call to arms by Putin will quickly turn into a call for him to submit his retirement package sans secure long life expectancy.
