If it looks like it's going to happen ship Ukraine another dozen M240s and the alternative warhead GMLRS. The Belarusians will shit bricks and run home.
Wierd. My career with my last employer was maintaining a system designated by the Navy as an M240. It was not a weapon system though.

I do agree with the statement that an onrushing famine was hitting Japan. Even in its worst case said famine would have likely killed around 600,000 Japanese people.

I disagree with the statement it would have killed more people then the atomic bombs.

Assumes facts we do not have. We do not know if the famine would have acheived its worse case senario. It is also possible the famine itself would have compelled the Japanese government to surrender. A self inflicted WMD.

Your making assumptions Japan was fanatical and willing to fight to the end. But as I pointed out in my previous post, Okinawa showed quite the opposite. Even with a 1 to 2 ratio of military to civilian on Okinawa, the civilian population had zero interest in fighting to the end.

You are also judging based on facts that weren't known at the time, and are still speculative.

The battles with the Japanese were horrific and savage fights. Japanese pilots were looking themselves to bomb ships.

It was not an unreasonable conclusion for the US military to decide path based on quite likely drawn out, deadly conflict against the aggressor vs a shock attack to deplete the will to fight and end the fight as quickly as possible.

The only possible ethical comparison here is if Ukraine nuked Belgorod to stop the Russian mobilisation and continued invasion.

Plenty of unhappy Rus conscripts getting pushed into buses, armed and sent to the front lines to kill more Ukrainians.

More dead conscripts, more dead Ukrainian civilians, more economic, energy and food security destruction by dragging this out.

The counter offensive presses forward past encircled Lyman and towards a critical road juncture.
Taking Kerminna would collapse Russia's gains from this past summer, as one domino after another would fall in Luhansk Oblast.
Let's see what Russian forces remain to hold this position.

Gunfire can be heard in Kreminna, Luhansk Oblast tonight as Ukrainian forces approach the city.

Doesn't sound like that's going well for the Russians...

Lyman is a disaster for Russia;

What strikes me is.... Izyum was obviously a rapid advance following a surprise breakthrough.
"No one" knew Ukraine had prepared large (and effective) offensive battle groups.
It was easy to say the Russians were caught off guard in a positional problem.

Lyman is not Izyum. Russia had time to prepare, they knew what was coming. Yet they could not muster enough forces to defend.
Another shocking display of weakness. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Some grouping in the back to push forward to rescue their men being surrounded.
Yet it does not happen when it is needed most. Russia cannot do it and I am left rather confused as to why. How could they be performing this badly at this late a stage?

I can only conclude that Russian forces are spent. Thus the need to mobilize, a bit late and a dollar short though. They might actually need Belarus to continue the fight a while longer.
I start to feel a little better at the prospect of Ukraine taking on and defeating both countries simultaneously. Should they need to.

Ukrainians reported Lyman was well defended but overall Russian military limitations on combat capable manpower showed up again. Also precise Ukrainian counter fire cited even by Russians as devastating. GMLRS also likely used in this role now, not just tubes.

The Russians simply don't have the men to defend the front they've got and dribbling in draftees to get captured or killed isn't going to cut it.

Well… Fighting in the dark when the advancing force has night vision and thermals…. and you dont, is kind of a b*.

Considering Ukraine blew all the bridges, I wonder how well their logistics will hold up on the east side of the river.

Which one?
Most rivers aside from the Dnieper are rather small, and we have provided Ukraine with considerable pontoon capability.

Yaknow, I'm not a violent person, and I avoid violence whenever possible. But at the same time, I detest bullies and won't back down from one. Because if you let a bully win just once they keep coming back again and again.

That said, I think Putin's fucked around long enough and it's about time he found out.

How about NATO designates Ukraine as Special Nominee (for example) - a state of official association like a military partner but pending future approval for membership. NATO cannot directly intervene in a conflict for a nominee, but any use of nuclear or bio/chem weapons on a nominee changes that situation immediately and activates Article 5.

A nice return FU on paper to Putin's little referendum show.

Russia's blockade and destruction of Black Sea trade routes and suppliers (Ukraine) has dire consequences for Africa. The famine is beginning to be felt.

Empty shelves and rising prices linked to Ukraine crisis push Tunisians to the brink
"It is like the world is on fire"
Nations are no longer isolated. An attack on one is an attack on us all. This is our fight. Our war. Russia must be defeated by force and driven from the Black Sea.
