Some tribes are better than others, some at least try to adhere to a rule of law, of human rights, of science, truth and reason. Some... try. But that is in spite of human nature. There is always pressure to regress back to our base instincts, to throw civilization out with the bath water. To wantonly murder each other. Our challenge is to ever hold back and stop that regression. But we WILL NEVER be immune. We must respect our nature, we must build in and maintain protections from it. Or we will inevitably fall to madness.

In America's hubris, we ignored our nature and dreamed up a fantasy that we were the super stars. The good guys. We forgot ourselves and now we risk becoming every bit the genocidal Russian.

That's actually a very interesting article. I guess it's Puin's Russian Orthodox Christianity coming through there? Damn, it's depressing how that superstitious nonsense hangs on through thick-and-thin.

I also feel obliged to confess that I myself, before this all started, had an inflated idea about the degree of Nazi presence in Ukraine. There does seem to be a grain of truth in it (the Azov lot, not to mention the historical record going back to WW2), but it now looks as if Putin's propaganda was filtering out and influencing the picture to greatly exaggerate that factor.

Remember Stalin crushing the church in the beginning, putting himself up as the focal point of worship for Russians? And what happened when Stalin thought Hitler was close to winning and he got desperate? He brought back the church, stoked those holy war sentiments as an act of enlisting religious fervor to help.

This is more or less what Putin is doing, though he has cultivated far more of a nationalistic friendship with the Orthodox church than Stalin ever did. Putin knows his personal faith and investment in church PR for years will bear at least some fruit.
