Russians are saying the 'evacuation' of Kherson is complete.

Wow. I hope this is for real. Skipping weeks or months of prolonged, ugly urban combat is pretty awesome as early Xmas gifts go. I presume the Russians still left lots of other presents though, Ukrainians will need to be cautious as usual.

Maybe 'Blacks Hands' Putin is starting to see a way to refurb his image some before he checks out. Rumor is he has pancreatic and prostate cancer now. I certainly hope so. Funny to hear Russians now ask to talk, offering to check their concession demands at the door. They should be answered with HIMARS, in the ATACMS dialect preferably. The arrival of Iranian ballistic missiles should be what ends Biden's reluctance to go big bore, at least in quantity, publicly. Give Iran some war dead to help their revolution along.

Anyone find the timing of a Russian withdrawal announced just hours after a failed "red tsunami" slightly suspect???

Were the Russians banking on GOP control of Congress to keep their failed occupation going? Why???

Because Putin has decided to pin his strategy on hopes and unwise gambles that things will break his way.

Ukraine will fold in hours. Nope.
My military is good strong and will eventually prevail. Nope.
The west will not supply lots of arms. Nope.
Energy blackmail will work. Nope.
Terrorism against civilians in Ukraine will force capitulation. Nope.
etc...

Very much linked I suspect, yes. Putin is probably as pissed as Trump is reported to be after getting a pink squirt instead of a red wave. He knows his luck is up, that his investment in Trump and the repugs will no longer yield dividends on the timeline he requires.

What say you Beijing?

Methinks the moment Putin realized that seizing Kyiv ala blitzkrieg wasn't going to happen, a very gripping, very suffocating deep dark wave of impending doom hit him and has been living in his head ever since, painfully compounded by the constant loss of territory, materiel and the lives of his conscripted army.

And yes, a cornered wounded bear is a much more dangerous and unpredictable beast to deal with, but having it skillfully, artfully and methodically declawed and defanged while trapped in that corner is a thing to behold. Kudos to the Ukrainians for being able to successfully adopt and quickly adapt to the advanced weaponry and tech being provided to them by the western democracies and its allies.

Humiliating Putin as a means to force him to negotiate terms while under the grinding heel of Zelenskyy is something I look forward to.

German gov says that among other things they have resupplied Ukraine with missiles for the IRIS-T SLM, which is apparently doing an excellent job of shooting down Russian cruise missiles.

The NASAMS is there now as well and supposed to be far superior. NATO really flexing their muscles.

NASAMS can cover a larger area due it's design and fire different missiles for defense in depth (AIM-120, AIM-120ER, AIM-9X, etc) but the big advantage is a nearly bottomless supply of missiles since it can accept a standard unmodified air to air missile in wide use with a production number somewhere in the tens of thousands.

Gantz: Israel doesn't have production capacity to supply air defense systems to Ukraine

Maybe Israel is afraid of exposing their AD capabilities to those dastardly Iranians and their 50cc petrol-powered "KAMKAZEE" drones?

Or they're just being dicks...as usual.

Syria, dude. it's about Russia letting the Israeli air force hit Hezbollah targets in Syria in air space otherwise under Russian/Syrian control. Doesn't everyone here know that yet? Israel is looking after their own interests, as countries do. Remember, countries don't have friends, they have sometimes mutual interests.

Also, 15% of Israel is Russian heritage, and oddly still side with Russia over most things, and a very large majority of Israelis do not want Israel to intervene on Ukraine's side - twice as many oppose arming Ukraine as support arming Ukraine - even with just defensive weapons (popular opinion influenced by both Russia and Israelis politicians/realpolitik of interests in Syria as you note)

Yup. With perestroika, the first folks the USSR let leave were their Jews. Many came here (they're all over the NorthEast of Phiadelphia.) Many, many more went to Israel, and they brought their Russian mind set with them . . . might makes right. It's what helped skew Israeii politics to the right, a shitload of politically primitive mofos.

Don't know about current Israeli politics but weren't the ethnic Russian jews supposed to be more sympathetic towards Palestinians seeing that the Russian Jews themselves were once ethnic minorities in their own country?

this study is from 2019

According to Hanin’s findings, 8% of immigrants from the former Soviet Union voted for left-wing parties, compared to 14% of Israelis; 29% said they voted for centrist parties, compared to 26% of the Jewish population; and 54% of the immigrants voted for right-wing parties, in comparison to 55% of the native-born Jewish population.

The left, he said, had high hopes for immigrants who came to Israel in recent years, in what has come to be known as the “Putin-era immigration” — individuals who are pro-Western and liberal, and who came to Israel from Russia’s big cities. But these hopes were quickly dashed as they, too, preferred voting for the right.

A russian air force transport plane is currently headed into Geneva, having flown from moscow across the Black Sea, Turkey, the Med, and through Italian and French air space.

I wonder who is on that, Lavrov ?

Wish NATO would just shoot it down and write it off as "little green men"

Steady reports of villages and towns in Kherson being liberated (with video proof) and the usual haul of war trophies in the form of Russian tank factory output progressing.

^^^ Silly Putty tendering full, complete and unconditional surrender?

They're going to try and pitch sharing Crimea I imagine, offer to leave the rest of Ukraine maybe in exchange, along with other carrots. Fateh and Zolfagar missile strikes might be the sticks in the background. Putin will be of a mind that Russia has lost too much to leave with nothing.

Zelenskyy will repeat his earlier stance of Russia eating a bag of sunflower seed coated dicks. The choices are: return to Russia, become a POW, or die. There will be no talks while Putin leads the country, the Ukrainians are not interested in negotiating with genocidal terrorists who ignore treaties.
